Anyone here a fan of that stuff? I think she's really great--especially the second album, Heart Food. I was a little worried that there was going to be too much hippy chick stuff going on at first, but it's really extraordinary and sophisticated stuff. For anyone not familiar, she was a singer/songwriter in the early 70's who's got that kind of rootsy, blues/gospel base that you hear in Carol King or Randy Newman or Laura Nyro but she's also got a kind of exactness and sophistication that reminds me of Joni Mitchell and Brian Wilson. Beautiful harmonies and lush, string heavy arrangements. A strange, but appealing voice, too--very pure but with a kind of midwest twang that makes it almost conversational. And she always double tracked it in a way that gave it a kind of ethereal character. It's really haunting and beautiful. The other late find for me is a CD of The Mice, Bill Fox's power pop band from the 80's. There's a CD on Scat that collects the first ep and the full length record, and it's really amazing. It's kind of like the Replacements with a lot of The Who thrown in, but the songwriting can be really subtle and sharp, too--a few songs could be punk rock Let's Active! Some remind me of GBV a bit, too--definitely a similar musical vision. It reminded me of how much I liked Bill Fox's albums from the 90's--definitely an interesting guy.
