In the first (SMEARED/TWICE REMOVED, as represented by tracks 1-4 on A SIDES WIN), they were a catchy if slightly generic typical early 90's alt.rock band. "Underwhelmed" is the clear highlight of this era-- and while I do sorta miss "Bells On" on this collection--the disc represents these two albums well enough that I doubt I'll ever feel the need to listen to either album again. In the second phase (ONE CHORD TO ANOTHER/NAVY BLUES/BETWEEN THE BRIDGES, tracks 5-11) they became for a while, I think, the world's best and most charming retro-pop act. This disc, again, represents this era rather well, though this being a literal singles collection, it leaves out several songs I would have chosen as more representative of the records ("Autobiography," "Chester The Molester," "The Marquee and the Moon"), which doesn't really matter as these albums are so great that they're worth purchasing even if you own this collection. The third phase (PRETTY TOGETHER/ACTION PACT, 12-14) is where they opted to become preening, ironic, glam-rock stars, and they pretty much lost me (in fact, hearing the excellent new track "Try To Make It," along with the allure of a bonus DVD, is what ended up selling me on this collection). I suppose, then, that my recommendation for figuring out whether you are just having a hard time getting into the band given the selection here or if you really do find them dull is to listen to tracks 5-11 in isolation and see if you like those better than the rest. If that works, program tracks 1 and 16 in for the next listen. Then go buy ONE CHORD TO ANOTHER, NAVY BLUES and/or BETWEEN THE BRIDGES and be happy that you already have "Underwhelmed" and "Try To Make It" here. "Underwhelmed" is the clear highlight of this era "Underwhelmed" is great -- and like just about everyone else I know, was my first exposure to the band -- but for me, the absolute highlight of the first two Sloan albums (and with the exception of "The Good In Everyone," their entire career) is TWICE REMOVED's "People In The Sky." I assume that's on the singles comp, since I know there was a video (amusingly demonstrating how they chose who had to play drums on Andrew Scott's songs).
