On to the larger picture though, why confine yourself to that record? I'm not sure if AllMusic's accurate as to which Fields albums came out on which labels, but Merge sometimes reissues titles from other labels, and you should be able to get some or all of the following: THE WAYWARD BUS/DISTANT PLASTIC TREES, which hit me with Merritt's genius even if he doesn't sing; HOLIDAY, which hit me with Merritt's genius once I got used to his singing; and THE HOUSE OF TOMORROW ep, featuring the mighty "Love Goes Home To Paris In The Spring." That's my favorite Magnetic Fields album. It has a certain vibe to it the other's don't have...sort of a David Lynch freakiness. I wish Merritt would do something else with The Gothic Archies. Thanks for the response to my nursing home question everyone, especially to Mark Kunkel, who did some legwork for me, and found an 800 number for the Lieutenant Governor's Office on Aging on the SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control site. I called and they gave me a local ombudsman's office number, which I then called, and I told the woman what was going on, and she said they'd have someone out there THAT EVENING for a surprise inspection. I knew if I posted that, I could get some help. I would say (and meant to in my last email) that I think there's d-ned little filler on "69 Love Songs," so my judgment is perhaps suspect. As long as we're on the subject, I have inexpensive copies of several excellent Magnetic Fields releases available (although "69" is gone). I found myself preferring a lot of the demons to the original songs. For example, "Everything Changes" (hip hop version) is superior to the album version. There have been some issues shipping it, apparently, though others can speak to that better than I can. Dinizio did a nice job packaging it, too. I imagined it was going to look like something he did from his home computer - and perhaps he did - but it looks very professional. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-loud-fans@smoe.org [mailto:owner-loud-fans@smoe.org]On Behalf Of JRT456@aol.com Sent: Thursday, May 12, 2005 9:31 AM To: loud-fans@smoe.org Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Of interest to Smithereens fans On the topic of ltd edtns, PatDinizio.com has a few more Smithereens Mega Box Sets available again, as well as a really nice solo box offer that'll certainly offer superior packaging and value to whatever you might be ordering from Rhino Handmade. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 May 2005 13:36:46 -0700 (PDT) From: zoom@muppetlabs.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] eMusic & c. > Unless our Mr. H knows something I don't, the Gothic Archies > don't have anything currently available on eMusic; Oh, I know very little about eMusic, make no mistake! I simply reasoned that whereas Merge releases seem to be new to eMusic, and whereas the Gothic Archies released their first (only?) ep on that label, THE NEW DESPAIR, said ep, could logically be thusly got. But I could be wrong-reasoning. > also while > one 6ths record is available, it isn't the good one. I think of HYACINTHS AND THISTLES as "the good one" due largely but not exclusively to the magisterial joke of "Oahu," where you don't have to be half-asleep on your bed, western exposure sunlight pouring over your eyelids...but it sure helps. Again, though, I'm not sure how you mean. > But I'd > like to stump for "Charm of the Highway Strip," in the > Merritt-sung category. Ah, that's one I don't know well. > And: I have solemnly sworn never again to discuss c-------- on > this list. (years of rants on the sujbect are all in the > archives anyway.) Last time I checked, the archive only covered stuff postdating the collapse of the previous archive; and was not searchable. Once again, though, correct me if I'm wrong. Wondering if Doug's selling the PopUp THE WAYWARD BUS/DISTANT PLASTIC TREES or the Merge reissue, Andy "There's a new number. I actually discovered this new number back in 1960 and this is how I was able to detect what has since been called the 'Quasars' or 'Quasi-Stellar Sources'. Basically, if you take a blank sheet of paper and put a zero on it, you at least have nothing. But before you put the zero on that blank sheet of paper, not only is the blank sheet of paper before the zero, it is less than the zero. And this is what I was able to prove... The blank sheet of paper is not only before the zero, but less than zero; it's before you put positive, negative, zero, one, or anything on that paper --that blank sheet of paper is not only before them, it is less than them. So I called the new number 'blank'." - --Don Albert, from http://www.grade-a.com/donalbert/quotes.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 May 2005 21:24:37 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Of interest to Smithereens fans R.
