The owner of the Bohemian, along with the owner of the adjoining record store, Horizon Records, is trying to get respected musicians to come and play here. The night before Shalini played, John Doe played the cafe. Things are looking up for this town. We haven't had a good music club since Studio B closed its doors about 15 years ago. I'm trying to listen to the WUNC program now, but am getting tons of buffering but I am determined to hear the whole show. Larry ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subject: Official Press Release Name: The dB's Online Date Posted: Apr 10, 05 - 11:15 PM Message: Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Will Rigby & Gene Holder... ORIGINAL LINEUP OF THE dB's REUNITE FOR FIRST SESSIONS IN MORE THAN 20 YEARS Band seeking new label home CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The original lineup of the dB's (Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Will Rigby, Gene Holder) recorded new tracks at Water Music Recorders in Hoboken, NJ, in the first week of January, their first sessions together in two and a half decades. George Cowan (Iggy Pop, Natalie Merchant, The Band) engineered the sessions. Seven new originals by Holsapple and Stamey are now being completed. The band also recorded a Spectoresque version of Motown classic "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" in reaction to the tsunami catastrophe, and had some fun with dB's and other oldies while the tape was rolling. So much was accomplished in a few days that it was tentatively decided to record more tracks and complete an album. The dB's are currently looking for a label and a co-producer for these recordings, and hope to have an album out early in 2006. Live appearances may happen sooner. This original dB's lineup of native North Carolinians was part of the vibrant New York music scene in the early eighties. According to allmusic.com, "The dB's defined the Southern power pop/jangle pop movement of the early to mid-'80s.... They provided a key link between Big Star and '80s alternative guitar acts such as R.E.M." Peter is based in New Orleans where he performs with his new band, The Peoples' Revolutionary Army of Saint Bernard; he also works as a touring musician with Hootie and the Blowfish. Will lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and tours and records with Steve Earle and the Dukes. Both Chris and Gene have active recording and producing careers, Chris in Chapel Hill and Gene in New York. Chris has not one but two recent releases (both on Yep Roc): "Travels in the South" and "A Question of Temperature", the latter a collaboration with Yo La Tengo, pianist Tyson Rogers, and Gene Holder. But, a good strange. Hell, all Of Montreal albums are strange (and I have 'em all, so trust me on this...some are just a little stranger than others). I initially had fears of THE SUNLANDIC TWINS being GO WEST by the Village People, but it works. The album has a shrinkwrap sticker printed with the phrase "contains the hits," with a couple of track names listed. Must be a stab at humor along the lines of Pylon's "Hits" album. The credits read "produced, arranged, performed, engineered and mixed by Prince" but "the artist's" name is crossed out, and "kevin barnes" is written in small font beside it. The album is on sale here for $10. I think it's on sale cheap everywhere during initial release. A bonus e.p. is included. I'm scratching my head a little so far with the record, but I know I DO like it. It's just going to take a little while to digest. I think the time it takes to digest a new OM record is part of the reason why I like them/him so much. - --Mark "We're not in infinity...we're in the suburbs."
