They were free! WNCW is broadcasting the show sometime soon, but I don't know when (recorded to DAT). Larry, kudos to you, because Mitch and Shalini had nothing but good things to say about you. Shalini said that you were an excellent archivist, and devoted chronicler of the music scene your way. They were both super nice, and Shalini dug my 110 camera, so that is definitely a way to get on my good side. Honestly, she sounds much better live than on record. She wanted me to hang out (!) with her and Mitch, but I had to go to work (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge). I talked to Mitch about the Rosebuds, and he said he hadn't heard them, so I went to Horizon Records, which shares the building with the Bohemian, and bought him a used copy of their debut. This is all part of my fiendish plan to get Mitch to produce them. I mean, they are practically neighbors...how perfect could it be? Eric's really quiet, but a nice guy, and good drummer. The audience really liked them as well. It was a gorgeous day, and they had the windows and doors open to the outsi de. What was weird was pulling up in the parking lot of The Bohemian and parking the car by the entrance, with Mitch fiddling with some amps through the open window spitting distance from me. His equipment cases still have Let's Active written on them! He wore a big black cowboy hat all through the set, taking it off once to change guitars, then putting it back on. This made me laugh. Shalini had on this little blue "sweetheart of the rodeo" (my coinage/plagiarism) hat on as sort of a feminine bookend. I got Mitch and Shalini and Eric to sign my Shalini CDs, and Mitch to sign my Cypress/Afoot CD. What's weird is I got my BIG PLANS CD autographed at an '87 show and now I get the first two albums autographed 18 years later. I told Shalini I was debating on whether or not I would bring my Vinyl Devotion IF THEY KNOW YOU'RE TRYING CD to sign, and she acted kind of weird about it. She said, "You're one of the only people in the world that own that record." She told me something interesting about Aimee Mann. Shalini says she gets $15,000 before she'll do a show. I asked Mitch what happened to the recording equipment he used in the '80s, and he says he still has it and still uses it. If a band wants the sound from a 16-track, he'll get it out. Interesting. I also asked him does he get tired of hearing about the early R.E.M. records, and he said no, that he's glad people still enjoy them. Everything's connected. The Harvest Ministers CD I mentioned in my last post is Widely Distributed Records #26, and Vinyl Devotion's IF THEY KNOW YOU'RE TRYING is Widely Distributed Records #34. Everything is connected to Scott Miller. Scott is the answer. Scott is love. lol - --Mark ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #78 ******************************
