(the jury's still out on "Sun.") I didn't think it was a let down! I really like "Reveal" a lot--there are two or three songs I don't like, but otherwise I think it's really gorgeous and strange. I also think it's Stipe's finest post-IRS hour as a lyricist. "Sun" on the other hand, is definitely iffy. I don't feel let down becuase for some reason I didn't expect it to be good. That said, there's some stuff on there I like okay, and some of the songs were really strong live. The next one's gotta be good, though, or i'm going to start worrying. There's a two disc version and a three disc version (third bonus disc of outtakes and rarities). Here, Earshot Records had the two disc version for 14.99 and the three disc one for 21.99 but on sale for 15.99, so I went for that one (probably on sale for a week or so elsewhere as well). If you are like me and like YLT, but just the more accessible YLT, but lose interest in entire album listening, this is for you (same problem I have with GBV, so I was glad they put out that compilation of their stronger stuff the other year). I just wish they'd included YLT's smashing version of "Little Honda." - --Mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Mar 2005 00:19:41 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Up with folks Bradley Skaught wrote: >I didn't think it was a let down! There are several songs on Reveal that just hit the spot for me in a dreamy, haunting pop way. You may laugh when I say it's perfect to listen to on long plane flights, but it is. >"Sun" on the other hand, is definitely iffy. > It's sad, but I've listened to "Sun" a total of once. I know, I know, and I do want to get back to it and reassess it, but it just seems like when I'm grabbing something to put on the stereo, that isn't one I reach for. I got the cd for Christmas, but I didn't listen to it until late February or so. I thought _Reveal_ was weak and I expected little better. But I was shocked. I love it. It's not every-song-great, but then, what is? (OK, maybe PABARAT, IBC and _Seven Deadly Songs_, and it took me years to really get into IBC.) I never get tired of "Leaving New York," "Boy in the Well," "High Speed Train" and "Around the Sun," and there's nothing I actively dislike. It's been a long time since I can say that of an REM album. Tomorrow's gaining speed on you. Dan ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #75 ******************************
