I was just recently informed by a fellow Steve Wynn fan that Steve was on KDVS last Wednesday. Check the Show Archives. They have MP3's of the show you can download. Check the showtimes of 2:30, 4:30 & 5:00 to hear the complete show. The end of the 2:30 segment has the DJ playing Alternate Learning's "Green Card" which unfortunately cuts out at the end, then in the 4:30 segment it picks up with Steve talking about Scott Miller and how he turned him on to Big Star and Alex Chilton who he claims Scott had never heard of at that time. A nice long interview follows with Steve continues in the 4:30 segment about a trip to Memphis to meet Chilton and the forming of the Dream Syndicate. http://www.kdvs.org/ Larry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 09:26:50 -0800 From: "Douglas Stanley" Subject: [loud-fans] RE: The Single Dead Yes, you are definitely not alone in that opinion. If you can separate the music from the culture, there's a lot of things to like. My belief is that "Bertha" is on of the finest songs around. I feel sorry for anyone who's missed it just because they're afraid of second-hand smoke. Recently, I'm feeling the same way about Led Zeppelin. Not that they were ever a "singles" band, but if you disregard their bloated blues excesses and concentrate on their pop songs, you can end up with a couple of really good mix CDs. I made one the other day that has: Hots On for Nowhere Celebration Day Houses of the Holy Song Remains the Same The Ocean Good Times, Bad Times Ramble On Communication Breakdown Fool in the Rain etc. I know, I'm a heretic too. Doug S. - -----Original Message----- As for the Dead, I've recently had a few conversations which have taught me that I am not alone in the heretical opinion that the Dead (also like the Cure) were actually a really good *singles band*! - - -Rex - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 12:56:24 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Test Just want to make sure everything is working. I suppose for some listeners, getting past Robert Plant's vocals might be a problem (come to think of it, in a very different way getting past the Dead's vocals might be a problem). People forget how intelligently arranged and layered much of Led Zeppelin's material - it's not just the same five songs rock radio plays (including their worst song, "Living Loving Maid"). Even the dreaded "St - no, I will not mention its name - will prove to be - once it's exhumed from its fifty-year exile - a very well-done track. So there. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 10:31:01 -0800 (PST) From: "Pete O." Here's a resend: There is an article in the current Flagpole about SXSW and what Athens bands were going. There are about a dozen listed, but these two may be the most r ecognized and liked by Loudfans. It's a little late to put play dates down, but the band info isn't time-expired. Love Tractor Why they're going: Not so much a reformation of the hallowed Athens band of days of yore, but more integral member Mike Richmond's new project, Love Tractor has an album out next week on Fundamental Records, also home to Jack Logan, Bill Mallonee and Workhorses of the Recreation/Entertainment Industry. Black Hole is a deep prog rock album that puts Richmond's high register vocals on display to strong effect. The band performed its first public show recently at the 40 Watt under the name Led Balloon in order to thwart undue attention; it'll be interesting to see the reaction of crowds outside of Athens. Will they expect the original lineup? Classic songs? Will they just go with it and accept the new old band? Of Montreal Why they're going: If last year's SATANIC PANIC IN THE ATTIC revitalized the career of the erstwhile Athens pop act, THE SUNLANDIC TWINS, Of Montreal's upcoming April album, should tweak that appreciation. Of Montreal's albums are becoming more and more the handiwork of Kevin Barnes all by himself, and it seems that he's got an itch to dance--the new album incorporates more electronic structures and dancey beats than ever before. Reinvention, when it comes across as this rewarding, natural and genuine, proves itself a good thing. *Also, from conversations at the Caledonia, and from the picture in the center of this article of a band called Phosphorescent, I'd expect them to be getting more critical attention and popularity. Their second record called AW COME AW WRY is coming out on Misra Records, and they're playing Austin too. Havne't heard it yet, but I bet it's a joke along the lines of Fountains Od Wayne covering Baby One More time, from BS. A news flash from the NY Times, and probably available at Leo's site.
