He not only mouthed the words, he bounced along in what he called the "Numa Numa Dance" - an arm-flailing, eyebrow-cocked performance executed without ever once leaving the chair." and: "The question remains why two million people would want to watch a doughy guy in glasses wave his arms around online to a Romanian pop song." Oh, so there should be no known reason in the universe why people would want to look at Gary Brolsma, since he's "pudgy" and "doughy"? I find this extremely offensive. Perhaps it would all make more sense to our NY Times "journalists" if the young Mr. Brolsma were attractive by what the mass media crams down people's throats as being such? Perhaps people wanted to watch the clip online because it was lighthearted and funny? Perhaps it had nothing to do with whether or not the young Mr. Brolsma was "hot" (by the writers' standards) or not? Oh yes, I WILL be writing the NY Times. No wonder the teenager has withdrawn into his shell and is no longer taking any more calls from the media. I'd like to see what the two guys that wrote this piece look like. I'm sure they're real head-turning Adonis's themselves. You guys have any thoughts on this one? This is a media savvy bunch. I'm sorry if I seem sanctimonious, but this simply pisses me off proper. There are so many people out there who have negative self-concepts because they cannot obtain/don't fit some sort of media generated ideal of body image, and these two jackasses from the NY Times, in my perception, are adding more bricks in validating that media-built wall. - --Mark np: The Pastels ILLUMINATION ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2005 13:11:28 -0800 From: "Michael W. Zwirn" Subject: [loud-fans] Free to Good Homes (2005 CD giveaway) A few years ago I went through my stacks and weeded out a couple of piles of CDs that - for whatever reason - I didn't feel the need to keep on hand. Some of them were good records that I just didn't listen to. Some of them were crap. So I gave them away. The experience went pretty well so I've decided to go through the stacks again and have a list of giveaways. All are free to good homes with a request/caveat - I'd love to get some kind of token in exchange, just for the value of postage: a mix CD or cassette, a spare from your own stacks, or (worst case scenario) a buck on Paypal to michael@zwirn.com for the cost of the mailing. I know some of these are favorites for some people. Please don't complain loudly if I'm giving away a CD by your favorite band. Heck, please don't complain if I'm giving away a CD of your band. It's not a value judgement, I'm just trying to get them to a more appreciative home. Send email to michael@zwirn.com with the subject line "Giveaway" with the name of the CD you would like, your postal address, and some indication of what you might be sending in exchange. Please ask for only one or two CDs, so the maximum number of folks get a shot. Sure, it's meant to be a fluffy article, but they run with the "How MYSTERIOUS it all is!" aspect way too far. Some people are probably watching the clip *because* the kid is "fat". A lot of people find his exuberance charming, and good lip-syncing isn't actually as easy as the Times writers seem to think. But anyway, Mark, my angle on it is different from yours-- I wish editors would stop green-lighting moronic stories about pop culture and/or the internet whose gist is, "This thing is popular and who knows why? Not us. Gee golly."-- but it's a weak story all around. a ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2005 15:33:03 -0800 From: Michael Mitton Subject: [loud-fans] Audio Players I'm working on a review of an audio player (amaroK for Linux), and I'm curious, what do you wish your audio player (iTunes, Media Jukebox, or whatever) would do that it doesn't already do? It seems like the features have remained pretty stable for a couple years, but I imagine *someone* still has some good ideas that haven't been implemented. And, the new Damon & Naomi is great, while the new Ida has yet to grow on me. mm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2005 19:57:34 -0500 From: John Swartzentruber Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Audio Players On 2/26/2005 6:33 PM Michael Mitton wrote: >I'm working on a review of an audio player (amaroK for Linux), and I'm >curious, what do you wish your audio player (iTunes, Media Jukebox, or >whatever) would do that it doesn't already do? I have a cd30, which is networked and plays my mp3s on my regular stereo. I love the better sound and that I can control it from the computer, but the player is really rather limited. Overall I like Media Jukebox's flexibility and performance, but I like MusicMatch's file tagging. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #58 ******************************
