Always good to get a 2nd opinion. As I mentioned I haven't heard their records (they had at least two EPs available) but can definitely agree with the "dreamy" comment from Jenny, although perhaps not "shoegazer". At least, not in their live set. - --------------------- Michael W. They do have a full length album called "Brilliant Career" as well, but I don't have it. They are working on recording something now, and I'm not sure if it will be a full length or not. Whatever it is, I'm greatly looking forward to it. By the way, I caught Devotchka tonight as part of the Noise Pop fest. I think they are from Colorado. Very fun live. Any band with a theremin scores major points in my book. Rog, how come you were keeping them a secret? You have to keep us up on the Colorado scene! Devotchka's last album, HOW IT ENDS, was high up on my Best of 2004 list -- they remind me a lot of the late great Wedding Present offshoot the Ukrainians, with a little of Calexico's mariachi vibe on a few songs. It's a terrific album. It's a terrific album. Your "late great" probably referred to the Ukrainians - but on the offchance it referred to the Wedding Present, they've been resurrected and have a new album out. I haven't heard it - but you can read Josh Modell's review of it in _The Onion_ here: - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 08:08:14 -0700 From: Roger Winston Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Film School At Thursday 2/24/2005 01:41 AM, Sarah Gordon wrote: >By the way, I caught Devotchka tonight as part of the Noise Pop fest. I sheepishly admit I'm not familiar with Devotchka, though I think my friend Alan (who is much more into the local music scene than I) has mentioned them. I don't recall seeing the band name appearing in the annual "best local bands" lists, but maybe I wasn't paying attention as usual. So it was not an intentional slight. I believe it was re-released here owing to it's rarity. And if I read the packaging rather than just sucking the music into iTunes, maybe it explained that! The funny thing is that the Blue Nile's style has stayed so consistent that a 23-year-old song still sounds completely contemporary for them. I only guessed that it was a less-polished demo... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 08:26:59 -0800 (PST) From: "Pete O." Their sound ain't broke and doesn't need fixing, either. Naomi's fragile cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is my favorite track on the album. This would be a great record to play when the first signs of spring come and it's the first time you can open your windows during the day. Don't know the man. Is he to Stone Roses what Paul Morley is to Joy Division? Which brings us, of course, back to John Strausbaugh and ROCK TIL YOU DROP. I agree with McCready about the Who, however. Hadn't thought of the Stone Roses in a long time, but when an exhilarating tune poured out of KEXP and turned out to be "She Bangs The Drums," a few memories returned. "Full Fathom Five," with everything backwards, that's a fine piece of work, too. Next book I'll most likely drop-kick across the room: KILL YOUR IDOLS. I'm open to debate on this, but I don't feel it's the New York Dolls with three ringers standing in for four gravestones. The soil's getting jammed up with all your friends?
