["Brian Jones" Subject: [loud-fans] poll results First of all, I got one ballot without a name on it, which turned out to be the (unweighted) most normal loudfan this year. At first I thought maybe it was Steve, trying to sneak through, but nope, he's #5 on that list. If you voted for both Macha and John Vanderslice and would like to claim your rightful spot as the list's pre-eminent tastemaker and/or bandwagon-jumper, speak up. As always, the value of each vote has been increased by .01 as a tiebreaker, so a score of 22.08 means that eight people voted for Green Day, with a total of 22 points on those votes. Close race this year! Morrissey racked up an average of 4.16 points per vote received, meaning that the people who liked his record liked it a LOT. This isn't the highest ratio since I started running the poll (that would be Tori Amos in 2002 with 4.2 or the New Pornographers in 2001 with a terrifying 4.5). Anyway, without further ado... Actually, I take that back; in the past I only calculated that for records earning more than a certain number of total points, so it didn't take into account records which got two 5-point votes and no other votes at all, such as Quick Fix in 2003, or Beauty Pill and Amy X Neuberg this year. That's gotta be either Jeff Norman or JRT. How come I'm so high on the normal list even though I didn't put SMILE anywhere on my list? It's all about me, you know. So do the most abnormal people have to unsubscribe? Thanks for doing this, aaron. Fascinating, as always. I'm impressed that so many voted, though I'm sure that number goes down every year. In a frightening day for "normal," that proves to be me. I had submission problems this year - evidently, they included the omission of my name. I'm surprised how low AMC placed. It didn't make my poll because I think I bought it on December 30th...but it would have scored in my top 20 otherwise. Anybody find the poll difficult this year, due to changing listening habits? I'm not sure if its advancing age or advancing technology (iPod), but I find myself listening to MORE music LESS frequently, and thus was LESS enamored with new albums overall this year simply due to lack of repetition. This was the first year that I had an iPod, and I think that if anything, it actually spurred me to buy more new music, because it increased my music-listening capabilities by tenfold, at least. Advancing technology also helped in that once we got a broadband connection, it became a matter of seconds to download the sample mp3s from a site like Insound or whatever, load 'em up into the iPod and listen to them on my way to the post office or while I'm walking the dog or whatever. There were plenty of albums on my list that I ended up buying because of this. Dungen was the big find this way, speaking of prog. Don't have an iPod yet - but if I get one, I suspect it will make some major changes in my listening habits. For one thing, right now, mp3s tend to exist in my mind as alternate versions of the "real" copy of the song - which is the copy on a CD (even if the CD is just burned from a downloaded mp3). This makes sense for music that originates on CDs (those I've bought, those I've ripped as .wav files) but not so much for music that I've only ever had in mp3 form. The one thing preventing me from thinking of music I have only on mp3 as somehow tentative or less real is that currently, I can listen to it only on my laptop - which is to say, either with SuperCrappy (tm) speaker sound, or in headphones. If I were to get an iPod, the balance of time listened might actually shift toward the more portable machines - and that in turn might make me give up the habit I have thus far of ratifying music by burning it on a CD, i.e., so I can listen to it on my home stereo and in the car. Then again, more and more home & auto CD players are mp3-capable, no? At such point as my players are mostly mp3-capable, that might be the real turnover point. I'm sure I'd still buy some music in higher-quality formats (CD or whatever) but for a lot of it, I don't really think the dif. is that significant - esp. as higher-resolution mp3s become more prominent. - -- ...Jeff The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2005 15:41:06 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] poll results On Tue, 1 Feb 2005, Chris Prew wrote: > Anybody find the poll difficult this year, due to changing listening > habits? Yeah, that's an impressive array for only 40 voters, but for me it just further confirms my belief that it was a very good year for new music. I had a hard time choosing my top 15 because I liked so many things about equally well and hated to have to leave some of them, like Sunday Runners and Rogue Wave off my final list. And I still don't have Interpol or Statuesque, either or both of which might have made my list, based on what I have heard off of them so far. But it's always that way. This year I will likely acquire 2004 releases that would have charted for me. In 2004 I got ahold of a 2003 release that would have been my #1 in 2003 had I had it then! > Anyone else go through finding out how many of their choices that no-one > else voted for? Did I blow my chances of being most abnormal and court > popularity by choosing Smile & A Ghost is Born? I think all that kept me from the coveted bottom spot was Elliott Smith and Mission of Burma. And I thought I had a particularly Loud-fan friendly list this year, but I guess people probably just aren't hearing the same albums within the styles they like. > > Thanks to Aaron for organising the thing again and to everyone else for > providing me with shopping list fodder for when I get near a > reasonable CD > vendor. Yes! I saw a fair number of people I like who I had no idea had a new record out in 2004. As if I didn't have a long enough wish list as it was... I got an iPod for Christmas, but it hasn't changed what I listen to so far. Perhaps that's because I haven't gone MP3 shopping. I've mostly just loaded my current favorites that I own the CD's, plus a few MP3's I've had on my hard drive for some time. It just means I can now listen to that stuff when I go to sleep without disturbing anyone else. I don't have a car hook-up for it yet, but it will be nice to road trip without dragging a couple dozen CD's around. Lighter air travel was a big factor in my wanting one. For portability I've just ripped a lot of my CDs onto the hard drive of my laptop and have that as my entertainment centre, mainly because I didn't fancy carting large numbers of CDs to eastern Europe with me. I miss the sound I got from my previous stereo, but the stuff I listen to is all stuff I had on CD beforehand. The only difference is that I tend to binge buy when I go back to the UK and then rip the stuff before I've listened to it properly. Stewart Mason wrote; >NP: THE COMPLETE LIVE AT RAJI'S -- The Dream Syndicate (disc 2) Great to hear this in unexpurgated form at last. I'd forgotten how good a lot of this stuff sounded. I do miss the piano on Merrittville though. Did you also get the reissue of Ghost Stories. Mine plays great on the stereo, but won't play at all on my computer drive. It doesn't say that it is copy protected. Anyone else had problems with their's? If your car stereo has a tape deck, you can use the same adapter that you'd use for a CD player, available at most electronics stoers like Radio Shack. It looks like a tape with a headphone wire coming out of it. I no longer have a Mac with which to update it, nor the iTunes library I created on said Mac. So my iPod is now a sort of permanent relic of what I though it should have on it as of late November 2004. Unless someone's looking to unload a Mac cheap (and I do mean *cheap*). However, I've got it on right now, and it's randomly chosen the Flying Burrito Brothers and Love for my last hour at work, so I could be doing worse. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2005 19:08:00 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] poll results Joseph M. I'm thinking of one of the combo tuner player/cigarette lighter recharger with dock thingies, since I will want a recharger, too. Long-time occasional poster here with a real out-of-left field question. I'm in Chicago and my apartment was robbed last week. Whoever did the robbing took the usual stuff: most of my stereo, Tivo, etc. And some odd stuff, like three box sets: the Coltrane "Heavyweight Champion," the Miles Davis/Gil Evans box and ...wait for it...the Faces "5 Guys Walk Into a Bar" box. Go figure. All stuffed into my own suitcases and walked right out the back door. I did all the things you're supposed to do: filed a police report, called my insurance agent, let a police evidence technician come dust for fingerprints, filled out the insurance loss report. Then today I get a call from a guy with the insurance company who wants to come take photos of my place later this week. This didn't seem odd until I got off the phone, and now I'm wondering why this guy needs pictures when most of the good stuff that was here now resides elsewhere. So I was wondering if some of you (seems likely that there are other burgled amongst us) might know whether this is a standard thing, or a clever insurance company gambit designed to screw me over in ways a naif like me can't even imagine. I'm calling the guy back tomorrow and I'd really appreciate some info to take into the conversation. Also, if Tom Krueger is still around, please contact me. I've lost your email address over the past two years. Well done! I'm surprised the Trashcan Sinatras didn't do better, but i'm thrilled that Statuesque was right up there. Glad to see Morrissey doing so well, too, since I don't think I could have imagined a more successful revival than his in '04. Both artistically, and commercially, he really proved himself--more evidence for my theory that the kitschy 80's nostalgia has made is easier for people to appreciate the real accomplishments of some of those "lost artists from the lost decade"! My little flash media iRiver has made it easier for me to check out new stuff by allowing 8 or 9 CDs to be in heavy rotation for the commute. I hear more stuff and I get to absorb it better, too, I think. In general it's kept my whole CD collection in better shape--I often find myself grabbing various CDs and dumping them into the player for a few days. I feel like the CDs are earning their chunk of real estate more now! love, B stray songs: www.davidbowie.com/users/bjskaught/index.html - -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
