I've spent the last few months working in Kiev so keeping up with the latest releases in the English-speaking world has been restricted to a couple of buying binges on trips back home for holidays. As a result there are a bunch of albums that I got over Xmas based on things that I'd heard about from various sources that I haven't had much time to get to know very well, such as the latest Interpol, Fiery Furnaces and Czars. Anyway, the real list is; 5pts Daryll-Ann - Don't Stop No surprises for anyone who knows how much I love their stuff. I was very fortunatye to get to see them a couple of times in the Netherlands this year just before they broke up. I didn't say a word, honest! 4pts Chuck Prophet - Age of Miracles A couple of his recent solo albums haven't really hit the mark with me, but all the signature traits of CP at his best are here with enough variations and innovations to prevent it from being a rehash of old faves. The title track is just beautiful. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues & Lyre of Orpheus I definitely prefer the former to the latter, and listen to it much more regularly, which probably says more about me than the albums. A great return to form containing several of my selections for song of the year including Messiah Ward and Nature Boy. 3pts Bauer - Baueresque The find of my Dutch trip. Signed to the fabulous Excelsior Recordings label. A lovely eclectic mix of styles and sounds. Killers - Hot Fuss Only got to listen to this properly over Xmas and it rapidly insinuated itself into my subconscious much as I generally resist hyped bands. Hoodoo Gurus - Mach Schau Best Gurus album in ages, probably aided by the time off being Persian Rugs. Contains this year's best song with California in the title! 2pts Brian Wilson - Smile Plenty has been said of this already. I'll just add that after spending part of the year realising that Mind if we make love to you by the Wondermints was even better than I had previously thought, and I thought it was good to start with, I enjoyed listening to the parts of Smile that sounded quite Wondermints-like. This made a change from listening for bits in their songs which sounded like the Beach Boys! Muffs - Really Really Happy Simple, straightforward and fun. Tom Barman & Guy van Neuten - Live Gorgeous vocal + guitar &/or piano arrangements of your favourite dEUS songs with some good covers. I'm not a big fan of live albums usually, but this one was beautifully done. Wilco - A Ghost is Born When it's weird it's very weird, but otherwise it is rather lovely. 1pt Rudy Trouve Sextet - 2002-2003 The weird and wonderful world of the former dEUS guitarist ended up sounding little like I'd anticipated. Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives Better than Your New Favourite Band largely because it is more consistent. OK it doesn't have Hate to Say, but then again the last album only had it once! Grand Drive - The Lights of This Town are Too Many to Count Lots of folks raved about this and I enjoy it too, but I felt it was a bit of a step back after last year's excellent See the Morning In. Tom Waits - Real Gone This was a Xmas purchase so I've only got a basic idea of it so far. More listens await, though I don't reckon it is up with Mule Variations. Ryan Adams - Love is Hell RA does the Smiths, but rather well at times. I also got a load of the Felt reissues and was rather intrigued to find that my copy of the Pictorial Jackson Review actually played train Above the City. Anyone else got a copy like this? It was good to finally have a load of this stuff on CD and the art department had done a good job, although I'm not sure what had become of the original sleeve to the Strange Idol's Pattern Any ideas anyone? Anyway, I'll now go and pretend to do some work for a while! My CDs are two albums on one disc, which was a good deal. They aren't doing this now. If memory serves, isn't TPJR A side pop Felt, and the B side lounge Felt? TATC is loungy all the way through, right? The Strange Idols Pattern artwork may have been considered too out there or not in synch with the look they're going for with the reissues now, though I'd have wanted an identical reissue, but maybe Lawrence didn't want that. I imagine he's a tad on the moody/high maintenance side. Ya think? - --Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 23:30:16 -0600 From: Jeff Subject: [loud-fans] rock music that is rock Thanks to some mp3s linked on Aaron Mandel's page, I can recommend strongly a band called The Mitchells. I'm too tired to do much describing: there are guitars, and they are crunchy, and there are melodies, and they are singy. All of the above are good. Some of the more pungent chords kinda remind me of another discovery sent my way thanks to the miracles of modern technology (in this case list fellow-traveler Tris McCall's site), Nova Social's album _The Jefferson Fracture_ - although those guys are more tricky-fancy than the Mitchells seem to be.
