That isn't to say that religion isn't an important part of Bush's life. In that same spirit, though, Kerry, in his party's tradition, certainly tried his best to turn the Dems into the God Party during the last election. Our country has fortunately been spared from any President who rules by a strict sense of "WWJD?" The closest we've come to that is Carter, and we all saw how that turned out. GOODBYE DRAGON INN (possibly the finest film of the last five years, right up there with AMORES PERROS, GHOST WORLD, YI YI, and EUREKA) 2. BLIND SHAFT 3. BEFORE SUNSET 4. TOUCHING THE VOID 5. LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE (obligatory disclaimer: I switched it off about two-thirds of the way through and never caught the end; however, I switched it off so I could meet the film's cinematographer, the legendary Christopher Doyle, and wouldn't have missed that for the world) 6. THE TWILGHT SAMURAI 7. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND 8. UNIFORM 9. INTERMISSION 10. SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER...AND SPRING Details on request. Early '05: THE SEA INSIDE, sadly, doesn't transcend sentiment and doesn't seem to want to. Minh Nguyen-Vo's directorial debut, BUFFALO BOY, is a treat, though: beautifully shot (by Yves Cape, who shot something called L'HUMANITE) in goregous contrasts of earth tones, suffesed with hard work, treachery, and loss of innocence. In Boston #s 2&3 played for only a couple nights each at one of the few remaining independent theaters. #4 made the Landmark cinema, so I assume it had a short run in many major cities. #s 5&6 I saw at the Montreal Film Festival, and I don't know what their US fates will be. This year there was only one. 1) Hotel Rwanda Seeing it is almost unbearable, yet it understated the true horror of those 100 days. 2) Before Sunset It's either pretentious or interesting. 3) Million Dollar Baby The final scene where Eastwood talks to the Priest is perhaps the best scene this year. 4) Spider-Man 2 Best "summer blockbuster" ever? 5) Friday Night Lights *Not* your traditional sports movie--it's actually quite sad. 6) Hero Certainly the most beautiful film of the year. 7) Control Room That thoughtful Army PR guy is now lecturing around the country. 8) A Very Long Engagment which isn't really about a very long engagement 9) Touching the Void The most hotly debated story in climbing, grippingly told. 10) Maria Full of Grace Most overrated film of the year: Sideways. It was a good film, but it doesn't deserve to be this year's critical darling. Comedies rarely make my top ten list, but this year my favorite comedy was Saved!
