I think I would enjoy this movie much more if I were a teenager, which was the intended market segment. It's no EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY, but then again, that's a high pinnacle to try and reach (like the top of Julie Brown's big hair). I'm kidding, I promise. - --Mark, wondering about a possible EC BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE connection ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2005 15:57:21 +0000 From: "Brian Block" Subject: [loud-fans] re: Nappy D My short take on NAPOLEON DYNAMITE is that it's an inventive, well-acted freak show designed in the hopes that we want to gather in the front of the screen, pointing and jeering. My review-length opinion is at http://www.epinions.com/content_167730581124 The lengthy comment section, which includes both intelligent defenses of the movie and passionate posts from people who don't think I was hard enough on it, is well worth reading. cheers, - - Brian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2005 11:24:44 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Nappy D On Sun, 9 Jan 2005 09:38:20 EST, LkDylaninthmvies@aol.com wrote: > Napoleon Dynamite is okay, but it tries too hard to be unconventional (making > it conventional), relying on tired 1980s MTV cliches to define character (but > surprise, they produced it). I haven't seen it, but from its promotions it struck me as likely to be annoying in a sort of overeager-to-be-a-cool-movie way. And once it took off and became more successful, the use of the "sweet!" catchphrase cinched that deal. It's probably completely unfair of me to not want to see a movie based on feeling icky about its marketing...but there ya go. Plus... > --Mark, wondering about a possible EC BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE connection ...the director's a total liar about this. He claims no, never heard of it, no such connection...and tells a ridiculous talltale about meeting some old Italian guy on the street named "Napoleon Dynamite." It'd be one thing if he gave a hint that he's just putting on the press (a la Dylan in the movies...) but he sounds as if for whatever reason he's really unwilling to acknowledge the obvious source of his title. Plus he made some comment about his Mormon background and wanting to be true and honest...that, in connection with his evasiveness about the title, further contributes to the bad taste in my mouth about the film. Speaking of borrowed titles, I was listening to John Cale's HOBOSAPIENS, which contains a song called "Things You'll Do In Denver When You're Dead". There's an earlier song by Warren Zevon (also borrowed by some filmmaker) called "Things TO Do in Denver When You're Dead". Is this a homage by Mr. Cale? Based on the movie? And has this also been discussed before? - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2005 22:23:14 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: [loud-fans] poll + irc Here's your weekly reminder: voting in the 2004 Loud-Fans album poll is open until the end of the month. It's probably completely unfair of me If "sweet!" is going to be a catchphrase from anything, it should be The Family Guy, which will be coming back to FOX in the spring. With a movie apparently in production. And suddenly my life has meaning. Any Gilmore Girls fans remaining on list may be interested to know that Daniel Palladino is exec producer for both GG and TFG (which makes the scene where Stewie rips on GG even funnier). mm ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V5 #9 *****************************
