ALL THE SHIPS AT SEA, the new one, screens Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 pm; there's a beer-and-pizza reception in the Den of Cin next door after the screening. HONEYMOON, my previous film, screens Friday, Jan. 7, at 7 pm. No beer and pizza, though you arguably need the beer more after HONEYMOON. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 2004 15:52:55 -0500 From: "Larry Tucker" Subject: RE: [loud-fans] rogue wave tour dates > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-loud-fans@smoe.org [mailto:owner-loud-fans@smoe.org] On Behalf > Of Bradley Skaught > Sent: Monday, December 27, 2004 9:51 PM > To: Loud Fans > Subject: [loud-fans] rogue wave tour dates > > A fantastic live band--more like a Soft Boys kind of power pop than the > bedroom/DIY sound of the album. Check 'em out... > I couldn't agree more Bradley. I saw them last summer opening for AC Newman and was really impressed with them. It's rare that a band previously unfamiliar to me can win me over with their live show, but they sure did it. I picked up their album on the strength of the show, but it doesn't do them justice. I'll add that earlier this month I saw Mitch Easter open for Chris Stamey. Not only did Mitch help out Chris on covers of "Shapes of Things" and "Politician", but also lent a hand on the encore, a Sneakers song, "Ruby". A weird thing about Mitch's opening set was that he did an encore and he did it solo acoustic, both of which I've never seen him do in all shows I've attended over the years. Still no word yet on when Mitch's new album will be out, but his set was recorded for an eMusic release, so keep an eye out for it. For any Triad area loudfans that may be lurking Mitch Easter is playing at the Garage in W-S Thursday night. Zwirn" Subject: [loud-fans] Offbeat recommendation: Barb Jungr Since things are relatively quiet, wanted to pass on mention of a really great 2002 album by Barb Jungr - which I saw in the Multnomah County library of all places. Every Grain of Sand: Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan. Not knowing anything about this singer, whom I guessed was a) Scandinavian or German, based on her name and the liner notes, and b) jazz, based on the art and crediting, I was surprised to find this a pop/cabaret album of Dylan covers, by an English singer, all very well arranged and beautifully - sometimes idiosyncratically - sung. "Grain of Sand" is one of my favorite Dylan songs, so that was a highlight. ("etc."? Hmmmph!) If Pat Thomas is putting together the Paisley Underground box set, it's a safe bet that there won't be any Game Theory songs in it. Wasn't the Paisley Underground an L.A. thang? It's hard to think of a genre that could safely encompass the Three O' Clock, Dream Syndicate, Green on Red, and the Bangles, unless it was a geographical convenience to do so. There wasn't an inclusion in that Magnet feature article on the Paisley Underground from a couple of years back, either. I don't have a problem with that moniker, as long as it gives Scott some recognition. - --Mark, who just saw the absolute worst movie of the year...ANCHORMAN. Oh my God.
