Are those really "albums"? Aside from marketing concerns, it seems that about half an hour ought to be some sort of limit. It's too bad there aren't more rules for the lacunae thing: I mean, the easiest thing to do is sit down at a piano and pretend to be Keith Jarrett for half an hour, or set up some equipment and channel Eno ambient for the same time...but in most cases, this wouldn't exactly be interesting...nor would it really be that much of an accomplishment. Here's my tentative little notion - but it would have to be local (or, I suppose, distance-linked in some multi-mediated fashion). Get together a whole mess of musicians. Each one indicates what instrument(s) s/he plays. Randomly put together viable combinations of instruments, and assign musicians to show up at a particular recording facility at a particular time. Give each group of musicians certain cues (to check against pre-composition, essentially) - a couple lines of lyrics, a key or a chord sequence, a mood, or even something more abstract like an Oblique Strategy. In a set period (an hour?) put together & record a song incorporating the criteria. Along similar lines, I've always wished more tribute albums would be truly tributes: i.e., commission the participants to write original material in the style of the artist they're paying tribute to. (there probably are a few of those out there...) Related tangentially to both the foregoing: a few months back, someone (Bradley?) mentioned a relatively inexpensive but pretty good vocal mic. There's nothing stopping someone from claiming that they wrote a 50,000 word novel when actually, they just typed "Jerome plastered his master's castors" and hit 'copy' 9999 times. I like time-limit art, but you have to be able to negotiate with yourself in good faith about what constitutes success. a ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 18:25:12 -0400 From: "Stewart Mason" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] NaSoAlMo - ----- Original Message ----- From: "2fs" > Here's my tentative little notion - but it would have to be local > (or, > I suppose, distance-linked in some multi-mediated fashion). Roger Eno and Peter Hammill did a record like this called THE APPOINTED HOUR about four years ago: they agreed on a date and time, sat down at their pianos in their respective studios, and improvised for exactly one hour, neither knowing what the other was doing. Then the two improvisations were overlaid. It actually sounds a lot better than you'd think. What was that? It's me (Bradley) and I recommend the Oktava, which usually retails for something like $99. B - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
