Now that I've learned to play a bit of rudimentary guitar and have been relistening to their first two albums, sounds to me like he simply has the habit of wandering in and out of key. Not to say that he's unskilled or sloppy, just doesn't really pay attention to the convention, playing a natural when the key would dictate a sharp, or playing a major chord when the key would dictate a minor. Sounds just a little off. I think it became a "style" in that he did the same shifts fairly consistently throughout their catalog. I've never actually transcribed anything they played, so this is just my ear's theory, which I'm sure someone with more skills than myself will come and detonate shortly. Chris Wishing Emusic would start putting a few new releases on their site! You know, I love Fuzzy's version of that song, and I'd thought it was a major part of the Beach Boys oeuvre. So I started picking through my numerous Beach Boys compilations to find it, only to realize it was basically nowhere, not even on the box set. I think I determined that I was remembering it from my parents' 8-track of "Endless Summer", which turned out to be one of the few places it has appeared. Kind of odd... wasn't "Endless Summer" kind of a key re-release, and for many years the best-known best-of, a big seller and career-reinvigorator for the Boys? And if so, how did that "obscure" track end up on it, and why has it stayed "obscure"? >>Question: >>Is there anyone else in the rock arena who uses/used open tunings like Wilson >>in their playing? Mallon" Subject: [loud-fans] New CD from one of our own Hello People in loud-land! Sharples here. I miss you all, floating out here in List-exile...but I have been hard at work on a project I think you might enjoy... I'm finally coming out with my first solo album. It's called I CAN EXPLAIN EVERYTHING, and you can buy yourself a copy at www.125Records.com. I don't write songs, so I asked my friends to contribute. It's called the "What would Ringo do?" method. So buy this record and hear previously unreleased songs by 125 Recording artists Bradley Skaught (Belle Da Gama) and Paula Carino, Jules Verdone, former Alias Recording artist Matt Keating, Hub Moore, Michael Culhane, and our own Grahame Davies (of The Crowd Scene), who co-produced the album with J. Scott Watson. Will you like this record? Well, if you think the Monkees are okay, but you REALLY love them when Michael Nesmith is singing one of those sort of country-pop songs of his, with the 12-string electric guitar way upfront in the mix, then I think the chances are pretty good. Here's my blurb! "Sharples rocks, croons, twangs and gives new life to a series of heartfelt covers on this sparkling solo debut. I already liked a lot of the songs here, but now I love 'em!" -Paula Carino Now totally available! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2004 11:44:56 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: Steve Holtebeck Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Girl Do Tell Me Rex.Broome@preferredmedia.com wrote (Re: Girl Don't Tell Me) > You know, I love Fuzzy's version of that song, and I'd thought it > was a major part of the Beach Boys oeuvre. And if so, how did that "obscure" track end up on it, and > why has it stayed "obscure"? ENDLESS SUMMER was a collection of Beach Boys singles, so "Girl Don't Tell Me" must have been on a single at some point (yes it was, on the B-side to "Barbara Ann"). It also has "Let Him Run Wild" (B-side to "California Girls"), and since I grew up with ES as my Beach Boys blueprint, I always thought these were major songs. As to why it's stayed obscure, beats me.. Anyway, there are lots of great Beach Boys songs from the 1962-1966 era that aren't on the greatest hits albums, or even on the box set. And people who think the best Beach Boys songs are the hits are almost as misguided as those who think Brian didn't produce anything worthwhile before PET SOUNDS. Pick up the TODAY/SUMMER DAYS two-fer and then you'll own "Girl Don't Tell Me" and "Let Him Run Wild", as well as "Kiss Me Baby" and "Please Let Me Wonder" (two more great B-sides that aren't on any compilations).
