As I understand it, the writers succumbed to the complaints of the fans, who didn't like the Yale plot and wantd more Stars Hollow, and more Jess & Dean (who were both available because proposed shows with both actors got shitcanned.) Frankly, I liked the Yale plot, and I wish they had gone ahed with the original plan to give Rory a Yale boyfriend. I think they've done well with what they have, and the writing is still sharp, but the show was progressing in a natural way, and now it's avoiding it. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! While I agree with this, I think one problem with REM is that they've been almost morbidly afraid of repeating themselves...to the extent that they willingly avoid playing to their strengths. Now, granted, "playing to their strengths" can mean both repeating oneself and doing what fans like - but I get the sense that at some point, Buck said, "Can't get accused of 'jangle' anymore - kill the arpeggios," and the band said, "people think of the way we interweave vocal lines as characteristic - can't do that anymore," etc. I would argue that it should be possible to *augment* what you do well, without outright avoiding it. And frankly, I'm not sure why they think they do dirge-like minor key ballads so well. If I were to go through their catalog and categorize their songs into various types, I suspect that the percentage of songs I like in each category would be lowest in that one. Perhaps that's just me. > I love all of REM's records, but given a choice between listening to the > first six and the last six, i'll take the last the last six. That is certainly idiosyncratic... I'm not an REM hater, one of those who says everything they've done since [Monster/Out of Time/Fables/Chronic Town/ 40 Watt Club] sucks - in fact, rereading Michael Zwirn's review of Up (the one Miles recommended) reminded me how much I like that album - but I think that in consciously avoiding things they've been known for, they've weakened those albums rather than strengthened them. They could do both, I think: incorporate new approaches and styles and sounds, and continue to develop what they'd been known for. But then, I'm one of those people for whom Murmur is an utterly indispensable part of my collection. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb :: --Batman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 08:58:06 -0400 From: "Aaron Milenski" Subject: [loud-fans] Let's all SMILE! I heard SMILE last night and have some thoughts on it: First of all, it's extremely impressive how Brian was able to make the album sound vintage without making it sound dated. This realy does have the feel of what the album would have been at the time. I've heard several bootleg recreations and I have to say that Brian's structure and song order whips them all--this album has a perfect feel of a musically (not necessarily lyrically) connected song cycle, and a lot of the pieces I never understood now make sense. That having been said, there's a definitie lightweight feeling to it. It's completely missing the lyrical depth and emotion (and universal themes) of PET SOUNDS, and for that reason I think it never could have matched it. Maybe others prefer abstract and whimsical to personal and soul-baring, but I don't. The whimsy is especially notable, because this goes farther in that direction than the Beatles or Kinks ever did. I suppose there are still bits that place this in the psychedelic era, but to be honest the overall feel is that of a child genius, one who really can't relate to either the other kids or the adults. I don't mean that as an insult, just an observation. Some songs that on the bootlegs appeared as instrumentals or only with backing vocals have finally been "completed" and are fascinating (i.e. those who have heard the boots will be pleae to hear an actual lead vocal over that bit with the "dub dub" backing vocals.) I have no idea if these melodies were planned as far back as 1967, but I know that some of the lyrics were not written at the time. This is another neat way all the pieces have come together. Some curious changes have been made to "Good Vibrations." There are some different lyrics, an extended section in the middle, and the quick fade (which I always found one of the most shocking and stuning thigs in rock history) has been replaced by a more natural slow fade. I'm not sure what I think about this. Also, hearing it all in this context points out how of all of the people in the classic rock canon, Wilson was by far the least "rock." If it wasn't for "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes And Villians" it's hardly fair to call this rock at all, though again that's not at all a knock on it. It will take several more listens to fully grasp this, but I must say that it's very, very pleasing to me because it feels so genuine and so vintage, and that as I've always expected, while it's not PET SOUNDS, it's certainly the second best Beach Boys album. I'd love to hear what others think of it... Aaron _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? Get a FREE online computer virus scan from McAfee. The problem with Dean is that at some point, the writers decided to completely change his character and turn him into whiny braindead dependo-boy. That was odd...it seems now they're retrospectively indicating that that's *part* of his character, not all of it - that bodes well. As for Jess...I'm not as down on him as a lot of folks, but...he too got annoying, for being just barely two-dimensional (1: obvious stereotype; 2: hints of "sensitivity" - itself a stereotype). Frankly, I liked the Yale > plot, and I wish they had gone ahed with the original plan to give > Rory a Yale boyfriend. I think they've done well with what they > have, and the writing is still sharp, but the show was progressing in > a natural way, and now it's avoiding it. It's still summer! That is, because last season's cliffhanger demanded immediate follow-up - not the usual "three months later" thing, they continued the plot *immediately* after its events - actually, with the alternate-angle views of Dean and Rory, doubling back in time. Last week's episode took place some weeks later (they mentioned how many - seven?) but still before Rory would go back to Yale. I don't see any reason she wouldn't go back (and thus, allow the continuation of the Yale plot, and perhaps a Yale b/f - and note that Liza Weil is still in the credits, even though she hasn't appeared yet this season) - in fact, it seems that she'd want to get the hell out of Stars Hollow right now, after Lyndsey's mom went all psycho on her & Lorelai in public. In other words, I think the show's still "progressing in a natural way" (as "natural" as a show that clearly positiions itself in a rather stylized, unreal world can be). It's just playing games with the conventional TV calendar. And of course they've set up lots of stuff for this season that hasn't been dealt with yet: what happens with Emily & Richard, the Inn plot (which, I dunno, kinda bores me), and of course Rory back at Yale and whatever happens/happened with Paris... - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Solipsism is its own reward :: :: --Crow T. It joins Pet Sounds an essential recording, I think. One that anyone interested in pop music should have. Here's a couple of interesting links I ran across. - - Steve __________ Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 22:14:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: [loud-fans] The perfect mix Yikes! Had a heck of a time mixing Space Age, but it was well worth the time and trouble. Spent a frustrating Saturday getting nowhere fast, but nailed it on Sunday. There's a lot going on on some of the tracks, and I figured out that I was trying to get too fine in my attempts at mixing this song. I was frantically trying to punch in and out on tracks where incidental noises and such would pop up (coughs, hiss, string noise, cat bumps...). I was also riding the faders on other tracks, bringing levels up and down as seemed fit. This approached turned into a great big giant mess. It got to the point to where I was burning out and making more mistakes with each pass. After about 3 or 4 hour hours of this nonsense, I made a good decision and stopped the whole process. Tomorrow would be better. And it was! Stacey thought it was losing its' ROCK EDGE, and I agreed. Keep it simple. Let it rock. Instead of doing what seems the best thing to do, which is just keep pushing everything louder and louder, I started to subtract. I brought down the vocals, lead guitar, and the ROCKFORD FILES synth, and pushed up the rhythm guitars (which are doubled, more or less), and the faux B3 organ. The bass is still indistinguishable, but the bottom is there, and I'll take it. I didn't worry about the extra noises and such that pop up. I did punch out a pretty decent throat clearing cough, and some of the unwanted guitar noises. Burned a copy, went down to my listening studio (my Saturn), and let it rip. Awesome. It's all there, and it rocks! By far the best mix I've done yet. I have reconsidered which song is going to kick off this CD, and this will be the one. It rocks, it's got a real chorus (that Yoko says is catchy), and hopefully it will not scare off any listeners from checking out the rest of the songs. Time to strike the mixing board settings (after I chart them down - a painstaking trick I learned from Scott....You never know!), and get cracking on the LAST SONG!
