It most closely resembles Artificial Intelligence and Music For a New Society in its attention to texture, electronics and rhythm. But there's also a bit of Vintage Violence in it--there's more humour and the songs have, generally, fairly simple structures. It's more buoyant and lively than he's been in awhile, too--again it has some of that Vintage Violence off-the-cuff vibe, despite the electronic arrangements. Cale definitely avoids the dreaded "Fogey with a laptop" traps. A few songs have some Chill-out-on-Ibiza style electronics, but there's plenty of inventive arranging and personality, too. Cale's singing is hit or miss, but it's stronger than I remembered. The lyrics are stunning, as usual. I make my case, again, for Cale as one of the premier lyricists in pop music. And the album is just out-and-out odd--a welcome bit of confident, intelligent eccentricity. It's probably not a great starting point for the unitiated, but it's a worthy entry to the catalog. If "best-since-Music-For-A-New-Society" is the new "best-since-Scary-Monsters", then this is the best since Music For A New Society! Duran Duran: Also, i'm tired of people bad mouthing Seven & The Ragged Tiger. I think it's every bit the equal of the first two, and "Union of the Snake" is straight up genius. And god bless Pedro Feliz. Between the NL West penant race and the presidential election, i'm going to have a heart attack before the month is over. B - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Let's just say I was disappointed, because they lost the groove they had on the first two. If the debut was 17 SECONDS, RIO was FAITH (we'll pretend that BOYS DON'T CRY AND THREE IMAGINARY BOYS never existed). That leaves 7&TRT as PORNOGRAPHY? Sort of. I'd say it was more like THE TOP. It just has a looser, rubberier type feel to it that makes my John Taylor mullet droop. Also, I hate Simon LeBons godawful distressed leather jacket from this period. You were right >about him, and I was wrong. Actually, I've never had Pedro Feliz on any of my Strat-O-Matic teams, though I was trying to pick him via trade in 2002-2003. I'm surprised that anyone here remembers that! Not that today's Ryan Jensen looks to be anything but an innings-eater, but he must have *really* pissed off someone in the Giants' organization to not get called up any point this year, especially since the Giants pitching staff has been holding open auditions all year. I held on to him on one of my teams, but he's a likely cut this off-season. He sure looked good in 2001, but I guess I should have paid more attention to sample size... I won a Diamond Mind 1982 draft league this year (it's run with a typically generous hand by Loud-lurker extraordaire Tom Krueger, and fellow Loud-Fan Bill Silvers has played in most of Tom's Diamond Mind projects, though he skipped the '82 NL). My favorite Strat team has completed its rebuilding phase, will finish either first or second in its division, and has clinched a playoff spot in this 14-team NL-only league. My entries in my other two leagues are still, um, building, though one may turn the corner next year depending on who I land in the 2004-2005 Rookie draft. I also just inherited a team in a fourth SOM league (AL-only) which is coming off a long winning run but is past prime, so I'm about to tear it down and angle for high draft picks. With no fans to worry about, it's actually smart to do that sort of thing in draft leagues if you don't think you can make the playoffs. And in music news, um, I don't like the new Robyn Hitchcock (though Jeff does and will probably explain why), but I'm really psyched about the new Interpol album and getting to see the Pixies twice in October, not to mention Mission of Burma. later, Miles np on iTunes: The Starlight Mints, "Pages" ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V4 #265 *******************************
