But it's much harder to get a handle on what the week's new additions are -- instead of the old hard-coded clunky pages, you get a search filter with past 30days, sorted, bizarrely, by album title, not artist. (On the other hand, a few minutes playing with the search engine itself suggests that it is more robust. Still, I suspect they didn't usability test the new interface.) And the "stash" (save for later) feature is now limited to 100 items (although it transfered my considerably larger stash correctly and removes items from it correctly) The least cosmetic aspect of the relaunch is that it's now saddled (more than it was before) with a pseudo-dating-oriented dont-you-want-to-befriend-these-people layer. But like Stewart says, there's tons of new content. And some of the emusic live stuff (which i think is exclusive?) is pretty nice. the pathetic caverns: a zine - opinionated and eclectic reviews a studio - specializing in indie/rock/mobile/live/demo recording http://www.pathetic-caverns.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Sep 2004 07:12:25 -0600 From: Roger Winston Subject: Re: [loud-fans] New eMusic At Thursday 9/23/2004 05:32 AM, dmw wrote: >I think most of the cosmetic changes are poor from a usability >standpoint, althought it definitely looks prettier. You can actually re-sort it by artists, but you have to click on the "artists" link in the lower left frame (right above "labels"). But it just lists the artists then and not the albums. You then have to click on each artist to see the albums. The "30 days" thing is bad. Looks like there's no way to change the period. >The least cosmetic aspect of the relaunch is that it's now saddled >(more than it was before) with a pseudo-dating-oriented >dont-you-want-to-befriend-these-people layer. But it's nearly impossible to add someone to your "Friends" list. You had to have already run across that friend from somewhere else so you can get their profile and click on the "add friend". And there's no way to search for profiles/users/nicknames! It's just bizarre. It's the most unfriendly Friend thing I've ever seen. BTW, my eMusic nickname is (surprise) Flasshe. Dude, they're Irish, right? The sound of their record makes the point that they love the California sound just fine without all the disingenous geography. As an LA boy, it just reminds me that there are plenty of local bands mining that territory and getting less attention for it... and honestly, I don't even listen to my Beachwood Sparks records that often. Is it just me, though, or do the Thrills already have a new album, though? Weird. Too many "-ills" bands! Thrills, Kills, Stills, Killers... It's not just you that has a new album. I saw yesterday that the Thrills have a new album out. Does anyone who isn't already predisposed to hate it them have any opinions? I kind of liked the first one, but it grew tiring toward the end. It's list-priced at $8.99 (new), so I think they're aiming for the "I'll buy any CD for less than ten bucks" demographic. > Too many "-ills" bands! Thrills, Kills, Stills, Killers... It's like Pogoing (after all, it is Eggers I'm referring to) about a strip mall to me. I love Eggers, but I don't think I'd trust his CD collection on a road trip ("Oh, Night Ranger...Dave, let's save that one for later, k?"). My brother was recently transferred to Orange County, CA, Rex, and the cost of real estate there is unbelievable. My response to the cost of my brother's house was "Are those Earth dollars?" I was thinking in the car this afternoon how I AM fogeying out, like Stewart said. I grabbed three CDs to listen to in the car for the evening, and all three were no later than 1990 in release. I grabbed The La's CD, The Cocteau Twins THE PINK OPAQUE and the Primitives LOVELY. I buy new things, but here I am picking old stuff to listen to, when I just bought two new albums this week! (but, they're old artists). In the car to my (1/2) credit, I did have Luna's THE DAYS OF OUR NIGHTS, which is almost the 21st century! But, I was digging ON FIRE back in the '80s, so that's where the Luna CD's presence in my car originated from. If only music made the same impact on me now that it did in the eighties.
