Still enjoying this disc... >>With the exception of an indie compilition called Tinfoil Thoths, the album >>this song is from (LOVE IS HELL (the complete version)) is without question >>the best release of the year for me so far. Cool. We've probably congratulated ourselves on the Thoths comp enough by now, but I do appreciate it! >>plus there was all possible combination of the artists, >>originals and covers, and guests including previous/current Poi Doggers Dave >>Max Crawford and Susan Voelz. Keeping it incestuous and/or six-degrees-y, Voelz has played on a record with my brother-in-law, Jonno Frishberg, whose current solo record "South to Louisiana" features a bit of guitar work by... me. >>Paul is a very interesting person. Diminutive but powerfully voiced, steeped >>in country blues guitar stylings, writer of great original songs; he's got >>it all, and is an infectious performer. Can absolutely light up a room. But >>you're right Rex, there's something else, hard to define, that comes out a >>bit in this song... In the end, he's probably the first artist from this disc that I'm going to go out of my way to check out. There are quite a few, but the weird/trad combo really has me intrigued. I'm actually carving a little "big-eyed hawkmoth" to have cast into a little charm for my daughter, which is an indication of how this song has colonized my brain. >>"I call it an introspective period, others might call it depression" I call a spade a spade, and this is a very good record for the my own personal pit of depression. And it's time for deee-pression riiiiiiiight... - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Sep 2004 13:49:37 -0400 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] 1985 redux At 08:05 AM 9/10/2004 -0400, Michael Bowen wrote: >To hell with the NPs - when are The Shins gonna 'fess up? That's one comparison I just don't hear, personally, although I can see some comparisons with the NPs. Scott never had that hardcore Jimmy Webb fetish that Carl Newman has, though. (Incidentally, New Pornographers keyboardist Blaine Thurier's second movie, MALE FANTASY, premiered in Toronto last week -- I wouldn't call it *great* or anything, but he does an impressive job of getting you emotionally invested in a movie that really doesn't have a single likeable character. It shows enough promise that it's pretty clear that he's on track to do something really interesting in the future.) > >Except The Shins have a crappy drummer. And too many wimpy acoustic >guitars. (no, not a new Presley) I didn't know he has an orchestral composition titled IL SOGNO on Deutsche Grammophon, as well as THE DELIVERY MAN, which I've been enjoying all evening. He's back to rock n' roll again, with The Imposters as backing band: Steve Nieve, Davey Faragher on vocals and Fender bass, Pete Thomas, and John McPhee on pedal steel guitar. The back cover photo is terrific. I'd love to have it as a poster. Elvis is in an old Chevy truck with a Dale Earnhardt Jr. sticker on the back window, and he's half standing, half sitting in the thing, (the driver's side door is open) and he's sporting these severe pointy silver metallic and black cowboy boots. There's an FBI Anti-Piracy warning on the disc, and it says, above the logo: THIS ARTIST DOES NOT ENDORSE THE FOLLOWING WARNING. THE F.B.I. DOESN'T HAVE HIS HOME PHONE NUMBER AND HE HOPES THAT THEY DON'T HAVE YOURS. His vocals on "Monkey to Man" originally struck me as a little gravelly, but I like 'em now... they fit the record.
