(you've never heard of him, but he's a hell of a player) i'm also very fond of the tech9 xxl. very unique character, grainy, noisy -- you can't definitely do some neil youngish things with that. a little metall-y if you're not careful, but if you're careful it can sound great. i'm not sure what you mean about "don't have to think about too much" -- i set the knobs on my xxl pretty much once, and don't mess with them often. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 14:36:44 -0400 From: Chris Murtland Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Just wood and wire: amp advice I second Doug's motion. I have a '72 Twin and I've had to have it refurbished twice, but I will never replace it. I did learn after it collapsed inward on itself that it's probably best not to kick your amp in the face. Anyway, both times I had it fixed up, I felt as if it were brand new afterward. murt dmw wrote: > a good amp tech should be able to make your old twin (assuming it's > pretty old) as reliable as new -- in some ways, more reliable, coz > it won't have circuit boards. if the twin is a good size for the > venues you're playing, i'd try to get it fixed up right before > dropping cash on something new. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 19:47:18 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: Subject: Re: [loud-fans] question - Big Shot history - --- LkDylaninthmvies@aol.com wrote: > Gil, what did happen to > those huge photos? Well, the one I had of myself met a rather sudden and hideous demise during a very passionate.....disagreement between me and an ex-girlfriend. >And, where > are Shelley and Suzi today? Shelley lives about 5 blocks from me and I actually went over there not too long ago to pick up some mail (Stacey and I used to rent the top floor of her house..Strangely enough, the mail was an announcement regarding my 30th high school reunion...). She's fine, not performing music anymore, but still into noisy-science music. (she actually sold me her old GT era DX-7 some time ago). I have not seen Suzi in about 15 years. Last I heard, she was in Portland or Seattle. A real sweetheart! Gil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Address AutoComplete - You start. If you and Scott perform again, you should get your keyboardist (if you don't play them yourself this time around) to use that DX-7 when doing GT material...who needs emulation when you've got the real deal? On the flip side of the coin, it sucks when you have to sell musical instruments that you love. I still haven't recovered from selling my '65 Slingerland 5-piece a dozen years ago, (the word "fool" using all caps in bold type and underlined would not be inappropriate in describing me for doing this act) even if the Zildjian ride cymbal had a crack in it, and the bass drum pedal was mushy. lol...my mom has a Suzuki electronic piano that she adores, but she sold an upright 19th century piano for this thing twenty years ago, saying she didn't want to be bothered with tuning anymore. Okay, then. I like switching on the electronic metronome, getting those 16th note clicks going and playing Devo's version of "Working In A Coal Mine" on it. Sounds eerily similar to the spudboys. - --Mark S. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V4 #236 *******************************
