(Morrissey in 1995) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 13:18:56 -0700 From: "me" Subject: [loud-fans] touring bands i have this amusing/sad anecdote that i keep meaning to write up and post. trevor, a friend of mine from work, decided to do a west coast tour with his band a few months back. we were putting them up at the house for a night, and i was looking forward to the show. they're pretty talented, and i hadn't seen any live music in a while, so i was pretty excited. when i finally found the venue, i was a little surprised. the bartender was a jerk, the band was nowhere to be seen, and the place was kind of a hole. i grabbed a paper and waited. a while later, trevor showed up. he looked pretty awful. as it turned out, they had tried to book that night at a differnt club, a few blocks away, but after waiting for a response and not getting one, they booked this place. a day or so later, the first choice called to confirm. trevor kept the second place rather than switch. the guys had just walked over to first choice, and it was packed. they even had a banner outside advertising trevor's band. the place they were playing was empty, hard to find, and had done no advertising. the total attendence - other than trevor's band and the opener - was about 5, including the surly bartender and me. the third band never showed. while we waited for the opener to start, trevor told me about his day. the band had spent the previous night at the apartment of a music professor friend of theirs. the housemate, who apparently had been told about the band's visit, forgot, or changed her mind, or just plain flipped out. at 5am, she woke up, found the thank you note on the table, and kicked them all out, with much screaming and hysterics. they'd been wandering seattle ever since. the whole tour had been a bit rough, but there were bright spots - but they'd been up by about 9 or 10 every morning, and they were just plain tired. so here they were, on about 3 hours of sleep, playing a crappy venue with no audience. to add insult to injury, Pam, their merch person, was coming down with a nasty cold, and getting worse quickly. after the 'show', they followed me home, where i fed Pam nyquil and offered them food, tea, beer - anything they wanted - but it was pretty clear that what they really wanted was sleep. they settled in, and slept til around noon. they unloaded their merch so that it wouldn't get stopped at the border, we hit the local 'Best Breakfast' place and they headed off to Vancouver. when they returned to pick up the merch the next day, they had quite a story to tell. when they got to the border, they used the line they'd planned - they were on tour, yeah, but they were only going to vancouver to see a friend while they had a few days off. but the border guards are high-tech now. they googled the band name. they found the listing for that night's vancouver show, and they googled the club name to confirm it. trevor, the oldest by quite a bit and obviously the guy in charge, was taken into a holding tank, then questioned for what sounds like an awfully long time. they let him go, and turned the band around with a resolute 'and don't come back!' - they are all four banned from canada for one year. at some point during all this, the van had mananged to develop a leak in a tire, which was getting worse, and now, back in Everett, they were looking for a tire store so that they could limp their way to the next gig. i just wanted to hug them all - these poor guys (and gal) looked so beaten up, but they were so determined to pull through and make the next show the best yet. the rest of the tour apparently went very well, and it sounds like the whole thing was worth it, but i certainly got to see them at their most bedraggled. so be kind to touring bands - and be honest with the border guards. brianna - -- An attitude of permanent indignation signifies great mental poverty. Politics compels its votaries to take that line and you see their minds growing more and more impoverished every day, from one burst of righteous anger to the next. I had a similar experience with Canadian customs once, when I was on a business trip to Calgary back in the late 80s. Was kept in the tank and grilled for a half hour about the magnetic tapes I was carrying. What's with those people? I had no problems on a similar trip to Tokyo, and those people had machine guns... Sad story, but I bet it's fairly typical these days. So Brianna, c'mon tell us... what's the name of the band? I've had much more trouble coming back into the US than I ever did going into Canada. _________________________________________________________________ Check out Election 2004 for up-to-date election news, plus voter tools and more! http://special.msn.com/msn/election2004.armx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 15:24:16 -0700 From: "me" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] touring bands > So Brianna, c'mon tell us... what's the name of the band? with the premission of trevor now obtained, the band was Hijack the Disco (the site is down at the moment, but it's http://www.hijackthedisco.com.) > I've had much more trouble coming back into the US than I ever did going into Canada. yeah, and i had the same experience the other day. they didn't like the Turkish stamp in my passport. and i was just up in vancouver looking at apartments for my sister - no business at all. one important thing i left out was that in spite of all the crap, the put on a hell of a show when i saw them. one of the most impressive things was a piece where they pulled off (beautifully, too) some live sequences i don't think anyone does without a computerized sequencer. b ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 20:13:11 -0700 From: "Bradley Skaught" Subject: [loud-fans] list help Hey, anyone know if there's a mailing list discussing the work and current activities (ie recent shows) of ex-Game Theory/Loud Family frontman Scott Miller? Apparently, these are the only folks who know how to cut a shirt these days. For those of us who are a bit on the scrawny side, getting a shirt that doesn't fit like a tent is a real struggle, but these guys are still cutting shirts like they did in the good old days. I'm real picky about my shirts. I can deal with the American Eagle slim fit, but using the extra fabric to add four inches to the length is ridiculous. We're already the size of toothpicks, we don't need to look like Ebeneezer Scrooge in his pajamas as well. So god bless Kenneth Cole and Ben Sherman for keeping that classic Mod-style cut alive (even if it costs a goddamn fortune.) And let's hear it for the low-rise, purple pin stripe slacks I found at Urban Outfitters, too. love, B - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. You found it, dude! Y'know, Scott played a show in Sacramento last Saturday night for Steve Holtebeck's birthday. I was there, but I was so blinded by the flashy young guitarist he was playing with that I don't remember quite what happened. Plus, there was alcohol and toque-stealing involved. At any rate, I do remember it was pretty cool actually hearing live Game Theory and Loud Family songs with two guitars for my second time ever (first time being the previous Thursday night). Plus, I finally got to meet Joe Becker, my second favorite Loud Family drummer! I didn't realize he looked so much like Jim Morrison. The birthday boy himself wrote some lovely reviews of the shows (and there are even photos to accompany them!) for Tone and Groove (www.toneandgroove.com), which will be up Sept. 1. Good lawd, who decided that wooden looking buttons were attractive on a man's shirt? I've more than once had those horrible buttons removed from shirts and replaced with pearl looking ones. Now that George Forman is their spokesmodel, you can buy his grill there as well.
