"Licenced to Chill" (Beastie Boys reference?) is the album name here (don't know if it's his latest -- I'm not a fan you see), and he's sitting on a rooftop -- the same kind of rooftop I see on my 12" Replacements EP. And the same cool, casual reclined pose. The Replacement's EP has 20th Century Boy b/w Hey, Good Lookin'. And the same Hank Williams tune is also a track on the Buffet album. Can you picture Buffett listening to The Replacements? Then there's that baseball cap he's wearing. And, well his shirt's too long to tell, but aren't those "plumber butt" jeans? Yo! Buffett! You da man! Nothing like keeping it real with the peeps.... Got any thoughts on what hardware and software to get? If I were on a Mac, I' might try GarageBand to start out with (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) - I don't know how "pro" it is, but it looks like a good starting point and is part of a $49 package that includes some other software. You would want some kind of interface for connecting mics to the computer; not sure exactly what is available there for Macs. I've tried to set up a PC for recording. I spent about $1000 on a good sound card with a separate box that has four mic/line inputs plus some halfway decent monitor speakers. The plan was to go with Sonar (made by Cakewalk), which I'd heard good things about. I also have a Roland VS-880, which is an older standalone digital workstation. While you certainly have a lot of editing power with the computer and can get really good sound with the right hardware, I've found I prefer the standalone recorders. The biggest reason is their portability: I don't have to move a computer around if I decide I want to record something in the bathroom or living room or at someone else's house, etc. [In theory, a properly equipped laptop might offer a similar benefit, but I've never tried that.] The whole experience just seems to fit better with hobbyist recording where you aren't really trying to set up a serious project studio. But the interface is not going to be as friendly (or colorful), although it will be more physical (actual faders, etc.); however, you can buy "control surfaces" that give you physical faders for controlling computer recording software, too. You'll also want a couple of decent condenser mics for recording acoustic instruments. Got any thoughts on what > hardware and software to get? GarageBand is a good multitrack recorder, but you'll want to focus, as Chris said, on a couple good microphones & a good sound card. If the music will involve more than just keeping the levels the same all through the song, I'd advise looking into a 4-track MiniDisc recorder, where you can ping-pong between tracks (mix 3 tracks down to the fourth, then use 1-3 again) w/o generation loss and contorl levels manually. Is the sound quality improved? The IRS version of CYPRESS/AFOOT and the original BIG PLANS CD sound fine to my ears, but I think EVERY DOG would do well with a remaster. Was that one reissued as well? I haven't seen it at the store. Are there extra liner notes or anything? I'm a sucker for a good remaster, but sometimes, the difference in quality is so miniscule, (i.e. The English Beat catalogue from a few years back) I wish I'd just kept the original and spent the 16 bucks on something else. Also, is the new album by the Waxwings good, anyone? I loved the first one. The second was so-so to my ears. Logic fans are legion, but it's said to have an extremely steep learning curve; Digital Performer by MOTU also has a lot of fans in the Mac world, and it gets quite good reviews. downside: it's more expensive than, say, the entry level ProTools package, which is said to be fairly easy to learn but locks you into Digidesign hardware. there are also a number of entry-level software options of negligible cost, although one is still encouraged to fork out for a good mic and compressor (and, of course, sound card). you might root around on the forums on www.osxaudio.com, but as that implies, i'm predisposed to Macs. i can, though, report the recent discovery of a cool publication for home (and pro) studio recording geeks, called TapeOp. it's chock full of techno-wankery (discussions of microphones, boards, pre-amps, what have you) and interviews with interesting folks in the field. the new issue (No. 42) has longish interviews with Alan Parsons and John Leckie; the latter is specifically queried about his work with the Fall in the mid-80s, which yields some funny anecdotes about their recording process. also, the editor's CD picks for the month include Mission of Burma, Victor Krummenacher, Shalini and Danny Pearson. how hip is that? best of all, subscriptions are free (!) at www.tapeop.com. dc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2004 00:58:39 EDT From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Let's Active reissues/Waxwings In a message dated 7/27/04 11:37:17 PM, smholt@ix.netcom.com writes: > Let's Active covered Cheap Trick's "Downed" as well?? > Good point, and I should've thought of Cheap Trick myself, having just bought the Jap. mini-LP edition of AT BUDOKAN earlier this evening.
