Her vocals on "Spring Day in Ohio" and "Cousin" send chills down my spine. Apparently, she has an album coming out this September that features Lucinda WIlliams, Vicki Peterson and Adam Duritz. This is great news, but what I'm curious about is they are helping finance the release by selling a $25 disc of demos for the album. Has anyone out there heard the demos? If so, are they worth the somewhat steep asking price? - --Lurker George "keep cool, but care" - Thomas Pynchon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jul 2004 08:43:43 -0700 From: "Bradley Skaught" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Cotton Mather : THE BIG PICTURE I really love The Big Picture. It's not quite as great as Kon Tiki (which is probably one of my favorite albums), but I think it's still fantastic. The rocking stuff sounds more like what they were like live--a bit more unhinged and explosive. By the band's own admission, Kon Tiki was something of a blessed experience--they often talked about how everything really fell into place during the making of it. The Big Picture does lack that feeling of realized creative spark, but it's still really brilliant and full of stunning stuff. It's a shame they've broken up. I think Cotton Mather were one of the really great pop bands--kind of "our Big Star" in the sense of being firmly rooted in the classics of the genre, but able to stamp out a very distinct and idiosyncratic personality. Also like Big Star, they managed to sound exactly like the time in which they existed, which I really admire in a pop band. I'll be curious to see what Robert Harrison does next. I guess it was self released here in the bay area last year, but it got picked up by Sub Pop and came out a couple weeks ago. It's a really strange and interesting pop album. It's kind of got an Elephant 6 vibe to it, but less goofy and retro. The guy's got a great voice--really versatile. There's a singer/songwriter-y vibe as well--a more eccentric Elliott Smith maybe. Great hooks, really interesting production. Very, very cool-- check it out! B - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Not only is he constantly on the charts singing with the current stars, but there are truckloads of mind blowingly terrible songs that are obvious tributes to him. Like the Eagles, Kid Rock, Celine Dion and, I dunno maybe Journey, Buffet has joined the ranks of New Country icons. One of the worst (and therefore greatest) moments in current pop culture is Buffet's "entrance" on the Alan Jackson hit "It's Five O'clock Somewhere"--the fake crowd noise is only made worse by the painfully forced and almost Dada-like akwardness of Jackson and Buffet's "banter". It's stunning. That song features one of the worst lines I can think right in the main hook: "It's only half past twelve, but I don't care, it's five o'clock somewhere". That's not true is it? Isn't it actually just 5:30 somewhere? Is there actually a time zone somewhere that's a half an hour different from wherever Alan Jackson is? Isn't this what Sir Sanford Fleming was trying to eliminate? B - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). The only place in SC it is playing is in Charleston, 200 miles away. Easy to see why I'm moving back there, eh? Or, I could make a quick 150 mile dash off to Atlanta. Oh, but if I want to see a documentary on how Dale Earnhardt Jr. organizes his sock drawer, I'm sure that I'd have to wait in line all night for tickets. Howdy folks, please excuse the 2 week vacation I took from this darn recording project, but I'm cranking it up again... I've spent some quality time with my brilliantly inspired practice tape, and this morning I thought I was ready to tackle the guitar hooks and lead break for "This Is The Space Age". I had 1 track I wanted to put it all on, so I could have 1 more free track for keyboard flavorings (flavas!). Well, it didn't work out that way..... To get the guitar stuff done, I pretty much had to play parts all the way through the damn song without screwing up. I ain't that good! I broke down and invaded the keyboard track so I would not go absolutely CRAZY, trying to play all that stuff as perfect as I could live with. Add to that the fact that last night when Stacey and I were trying to give Monster (our cat), his every other day quotient of his SUBCUTANEOUS FLUIDS (!!!), his very lethal back claws got me right in the flipping-the-bird finger on my guitar-important-left hand, plus the blisters I'd developed from playing this stuff over and over again, well needless to say, I finally got the parts down good enough for me. Come mixing time, I'm gonna need 6 arms. It's common, I guess to have a really clean, smokin' rhythm track, but once you start adding the good stuff, the good clean rhythm track decides to turn dirty and mushy. I really hate that, but in order to turn a decidedly common song structure into HIGH FRIGGIN' ART, the clean basic tracks will just have to kiss my ass! It's done. Most of the ART has been successfully added and I'm real happy with my faux-lead work. I'm surprised at how good I can fake being a decent guitar player. I would like to thank Eric Clapton (Disraeli Gears era)for the inspiration.("Bloody hell, mate! You suck!!!!") Now I gotta send this song into outer space, somehow, with a very limited availability of tape space. Good damn luck with that, buddy... Cocktail time.
