On the 6ths front, I liked the first one a lot better- I thought it showed a lot more effort, a hungrier artist seeing an avenue to be heard. I thought Hyacinths was fine but seemed more cavalier, as if it were a prank he could suddenly get away with because of his notoriety. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 2004 11:48:38 -0500 From: "Fortissimo" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mag Fields/ 6ths On Mon, 5 Jul 2004 10:58:57 EDT, GlenSarvad@aol.com said: > I'm actually a Merritt fan, but my favorite line about his band came from > someone on this list (whose identity escapes me but who will hopefully > take a bow > if they're still subscribed) circa the release of 69LS: his singers all > sounds like they're trying *really* hard for a part in their high school > musical. I don't know who said that - but I can't judge it, really, since I'm fairly unable to distinguish between "good" musical-theater -style singing and bad versions thereof (aside from, of course, whether the singer's got the basics of being in tune & more or less rhythmically accurate down). In a way, though, that's surprising...since Merritt typically asks his singers *not* to emote - and bad theater singing is the home of over-emoting. That lack of overt emoting is one thing people don't like about Merritt's own singing, in fact. Too bad the Scott Miller guest vocal never was able to materialize on a 6ths album - someone here (Photo Robert? Dan Vallor? Gil?) noted that the two are mutual fans, and initial contacts were made, but things fell through. (All this courtesy of my possibly faulty memory, of course...) - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Solipsism is its own reward :: :: --Crow T.
