I saw them last night in SF and it was one of the most exciting shows i've seen in ages. There are a lot of things that come across live that are only bubbling under on the album. It became really clear that they're working with the whole vocabulary of British pop from the late 70's on, not just the post-punk thing. There's some Soft Boys/Monochrome Set/XTC stuff, Postcard records, Factory records, Smiths, Suede, La's, dance music, etc. If the record casts them in a bit of a mid-fi post-punk light, live things feel much more up-to-date and the palette is greater. I'd like to see them make a record with that broader palette--the songwriting and playing is already there, but it's clear there's a lot more sonic depth than I thought there would be. They were also adorable and charming as hell! It was particularily sweet because they seemed very surprised by how popular they've become in the states. The venue was absolutely packed and the crowd was really lively and vocal. After "Matinee", which recieved a ridiculously enthusiastic roar of approval, frontman Alex Kapranos just looked at the audience stunned and said, "wow." It was also great to be in an audience that actually danced. Everyone was dancing the whole time and the atmosphere was really up and genuine. I can't recommend them highly enough. I know most of the criticisms of these guys revolve around their sounding like Orange Juice and Gang of Four, but the fact is they're truly better than Orange Juice (who I love) and sexier than Gang of Four (but probably just as smart!) And though I love the album, they're a much deeper and more varied live act.
