If you like Calexico, I recommend Giant Sand with whom members of Calexico have played since Giant Sand's 1988's "The Love Songs". Very fractured and deserty music, I've been a big fan since the mid-80's. I also love the OP8 CD which is just Giant Sand (Howe Gelb, John Convertino & Joey Burns) with Lisa Germano. They do a great version of the N. Sinatra/L. Hazlewood gem "Sand". I recently found a Giant Sand video on VHS called Drunken Bees, it's not that impressive and is even more fractured than GS, but it has the Calexico duo in it. - - Dan Vallor ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 09:30:33 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Calexico/Giant Sand On Tue, 25 May 2004, Vallor wrote: > > Any Calexico fans on this list. Absolutely - I saw Calexico in London a while back when they had the full Mariachi Luz de Luna band with them - there's a review of this at http://www.musicomh.com/gigs/calexico.htm - terrific evening. It was videoed which they said was going to be released on DVD but haven't seen it around yet... They were absolutely incredible. I was lucky enough to see them with the full band--horns, pedal steel, etc. Unfortunately I haven't liked any of their albums very much. The singing and songwriting don't carry much weight, and they're a bit same-y. For the Giant Sand curious, I think Center of the Universe is the best album to start with. It has just enough of everything they do well, without going overboard. And I second the recommendation of OP8--really gorgeous and haunting. love, B "I don't believe I have time to go over what is wrong" -Felipe Alou - ----- Original Message ----- From: "dmw" To: "ideology ... exclusively at hecht's!"
