It's not a radical change, but it's certainly the shiniest, most high tech sounding since Viva Hate. Lots of keyboards (courtesy of Roger Manning) and some skittery beats here and there (more Dido than Radiohead). Jerry Finn doesn't have the depth of skill that Lillywhite had, but I think immediacy was a priority this time and Finn does create a big, beautiful, technicolor sound. Most remarkable, perhaps, are the quality of the vocal performances. Morrissey's really reached a new level of craft with his singing. The phrasing, intonation and timbre are stunning throughout. It's the kind of skill you don't expect to find on a pop record anymore. The lyrics are typically great. If you don't like Morrissey's lyrics I don't think there's much here to change your mind, but if you do it's thoroughly rewarding (and you can probably argue that one's taste in that department is often connected to one's feelings about Morrissey in general.) I think of Morrissey right up there with Bowie or Scott when it comes to lyrical brilliance, and there's plenty here that lives up to that standard (particularily the lovely "I Have Forgiven Jesus".) It also features some of his best straight-up pop songs in ages. "First of the Gang to Die" and "I Like You" are the kind of hooky, Morrissey bubblegum he hasn't really done since those early EPs. I've probably played this thing thirty times since it came out and i'm still thrilled. I'd like to know how representative "Si Tu Dalais" is. In my experience, Calexico are one of those bands where if you like one of their albums, you're pretty likely to like all of them: the proportions change, but the basic ingredients stay the same. That said, it seems like most people like their second album, THE BLACK LIGHT, the most. The third, HOT RAIL, has a lot of the long jazzy instrumentals that I like, though.
