And/or for that matter, the new Proclaimers, Patty Griffin, Luka Bloom (that's a live) one, and not forgetting that XTC box set (can't say as I've ever seen another box set without one single solitary originally-released version of a song)? Worst Song Ever: "Run Joey Run," by David Geddes. And if you doubt it, take a listen. For whoever it was (Jeffrey?) that wanted all audience noise off albums...ladies and gentlemen, STARLESS AND BIBLE BLACK! Thinking seriously once again about moving to Canada, Andy 'Built This City' Tops Worst Songs List Wed Apr 21, 8:16 AM ET NEW YORK - Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever. Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said. The list, which appears in the May issue, includes songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie (news), Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others. Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar." Starship lead singer Grace Slick (news) says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep (news) playing Joan of Arc." Rounding out the top 10: "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus (news); "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung; "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit; "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice; "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News; "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin (news); "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy (news); "American Life," Madonna; and "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney (news) and Stevie Wonder (news). Other songs on the list: Toby Keith (news)'s "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (No. 22); Whitney Houston (news)'s "Greatest Love of All" (No. 30); Ricky Martin (news)'s "She Bangs" (No. 39); Billy Joel (news)'s "We Didn't Start the Fire" (No. 41); Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" (No. 42); The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (No. 48); and Celine Dion (news)'s "My Heart Will Go On" (No. 50). Blender and VH1's TV special "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs ... Ever" airs May 12. - --from http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=495&ncid=689&e=6&u=/ap/20040421/ap_en_mu/music_worst_songs ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 15:59:55 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: [loud-fans] Donnie Darko to be re-released theatrically http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/04/21/film.darko.reut/index.html It's gaining 20 minutes of "never seen before" footage. From the article: >"Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always >felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two >hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I >feel like I've finally been able to complete the film." If that extra footage isn't truly "never seen before" but is the same as what's in the deleted scenes on the current DVD, I strongly feel that the film is better off without it. A large part of DONNIE DARKO's appeal, to me at least, was that it admitted multiple interpretations and forced the viewer to do some of the heavy lifting; putting those scenes back in would create a more constricted, even didactic, experience. I remember listening to Kelly's commentary (for the finished film as well as on the deleted scenes) and thinking, "you didn't end up making the movie you thought you did -- and it's a good thing that you didn't." So I'm feeling like the revised version will be *less* satisfying to me. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 16:14:24 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] New dates but absolutely no obligations At 05:42 PM 4/20/2004 -0700, Bradley Skaught wrote: >The last time I posted dates I got in trouble for demanding that people go, so >i'm being kinder and gentler this time. If the show's sufficiently affordable, I might catch Vanderslice and then head home. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 20:32:57 -0400 From: glenn mcdonald Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Donnie Darko to be re-released theatrically I'm with Miles on this. I thought Kelly's DVD commentary was fascinating, but oblivious. I remember really liking a couple of the deleted scenes with Donnie and his sister, but in general feeling that deletion had been the right impulse. So get the DVD before he messes with that, too! glenn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 23:22:08 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: [loud-fans] burma! The new album will be out on Matador on May 4. Right now I'm hearing a song from it on WMFO, Boston (thanks, Phil, for the Model Sons heads up!), and it sounds good. There are tour dates up at missionofburma.com, and I know some of you live in those locales, so demanding that someone go seems reasonable.
