I'm trying to help out some friends and drum up some attendance for a great CD release show coming up April 8th at the Cat's Cradle. The band is Shalini and if you haven't seen or heard them yet you should. I've seen them at least a dozen times over the past few years and they put on a great show. They have a new album which just came out which I think rates with the best of Let's Active with a massive guitar sound. Check out the downloads from the website, particularly their cover of Cheap Trick's "Downed". http://www.interbridge.com/shalini/ There is a Mitch Easter Yahoo group that I've posted a couple of songs I recorded last week in Winston-Salem. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/mitcheasterletsactive/files/ hope to see ya, Larry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2004 08:59:12 -0600 From: "Fortissimo" Subject: [loud-fans] Victor Krummenacher! Alison Faith Levy! And some other guy! On the heels of Larry's announcement on the Shalini show, there's this, from www.loudfamily.com: "Scott & Alison playing live: Scott Miller, Alison Faith Levy and Victor Krummenacher will be playing on Monday, April 12 at the Rite Spot, which is at the corner of 17th and Folsom in San Francisco. 'It's a great place, a cool bar with with good food, plenty of parking, and a real piano,' writes Alison. Each performer will play a solo set. The show starts at 9 PM. The Rite Spot website is ritespotcafe.net." I like the bit about the real piano. It's really hard to play those cardboard mockups they use in office supply stores. I'm not sure, but I think this Scott guy's been mentioned on this list a couple of times. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Solipsism is its own reward :: :: --Crow T. It's filled with a lot of live tracks and radio sessions. Overall, it is a lot more raw and immediate than their studio recordings. Some of the songs are actually loud and aggressive. Unfortunately, it was only produced in very limited quantities. You might also take a try at Submarine Bells. OK it starts out with "Heavenly Pop Hit," but you can skip that track. It's really my favorite Chills album. The lyrics are remarkably deep and meaningful, and the arrangements are nearly perfect. You can find used copies pretty easily, and it's worth a gamble. I don't feel that "Heavenly Pop Hit" is very representative of the album as a whole. Mike Jenny Grover wrote: Okay, maybe someone can offer me some good Chills advice. I LOVE "Party in My Heart" and "Pink Frost". I loathe "Heavenly Pop Hit". As far as Chills albums, I only own Kaleidescope World, and I was disappointed with most of it. Based on this small bit of info, is there a Chills album I might prefer to KW? Jen Yahoo! Finance Tax Center - File online. I have a cassette copy (on Flying Nun NZ) that has the same 15 tracks that are on the CD. The KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD cd adds a bunch of tracks that weren't on the original LP (or cassette), but I thought "100 Rooms" and "Party In My Heart" were always on BRAVE WORDS. > Low budget recording/mixing and bad mastering mars most of the classic > Flying Nun material--even the original records rarely sound good. > I think both the Sneaky Feelings compilation and the excellent recent > Clean anthology perfectly demonstrate what can be accomplished by > re-mixing the original tracks and then mastering them properly. In both > cases, the results are fantastic. I know that my BRAVE WORDS tape sounds a lot better than my BRAVE WORDS cd, same as my KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD tape vs. cd... I didn't have a CD player or turntable between 1986-1990, so most of my purchases during that time were on tape. I've noticed that tapes from the late-80s always sound fuller than CDs from that era. CD mastering technology took a giant leap in the 1990s. Rex: (re: BRAVE WORDS on CD) > Can't find one going for less than $35 these days... > can anyone point me towards an affordable copy? I tried to research the CD bonus tracks earlier, and it seems like the album has disappeared off the face of the earth, even though the rest of the Chills catalog is in print and readily available. Probably BRAVE WORDS.. ;) Since it seems like there are a few loud-fans who own SECRET BOX, there's a link to a pdf file for a SB cover at http://www.softbomb.com/news.htm. All three discs where shipped in a single-size jewel case, and this gives you a nice box-sized package to house everything, even if you don't print it at A3 on 250gsm card (whatever that means!).. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 2004 22:44:02 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] more on audio quality On Sat, 27 Mar 2004 JRT456@aol.com wrote: > In the case of Fleetwood Mac, though, that made for an amazing success > story for two fine acts that had already been written off by most of the > industry. You must fight to survive on the Planet of the Apes. Sure, I don't mean to say that these were shameful things to do and would be better forgotten, only that it's strange to see them uncritically put forward as third-act-of-Karate-Kid bits of inspiration. (To be fair, it's way more common for writing about musicians and authors to talk with apparent approval about how the long nights making such and such a masterpiece caused stress in their marriage, and I find that even stranger.) a ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V4 #91 ******************************
