It does! "House of 100 Rooms" and "Party in my Heart" were squeezed into the middle of the album--both originally appeared on a 12". > which has the worst mastering job I've ever heard on >any CD. Low budget recording/mixing and bad mastering mars most of the classic Flying Nun material--even the original records rarely sound good. I think both the Sneaky Feelings compilation and the excellent recent Clean anthology perfectly demonstrate what can be accomplished by re-mixing the original tracks and then mastering them properly. In both cases, the results are fantastic. > Have we mentioned the Tall Dwarfs yet? Love 'em. I lean towards the 90's stuff--I especially like Fifty Flavors of Glue and Three EPs. I highly recommend an ep called Gluey, Gluey and the Ear Friend--worth digging for. Chris Knox's solo stuff is brilliant, but the Alec Bathgate solo album is a real lost treasure, too. > Also, the Mutton Birds are > probably outside of that scene.. but they're another > loud-fan friendly band! I recommend Envy of Angels and their last one, Rain, Steam and Speed. Dipping a little deeper into NZ pop obscurity, I just recieved an album by ex-Sneaky Feeling David Pine (under the band name Bleeding Allstars) called Up Roses. It's extremely spotty (two songs feature a female singer who does what I can only describe as "Taylor Dane indie pop") but worth it for Sneaky Feelings fan wondering what the hell happened to the guy. The other ex-frontman, Matthew Bannister, made some hilariously bizarre records with his band, The Dribbling Darts of Love! My favorite song of theirs is "Stuck Inside the Birth Canal". Can't find one going for less than $35 these days... can anyone point me towards an affordable copy? >>Mayo Thompson's peak as a producer as well. Didn't even know he was involved. So need this record now. Never got Heavenly Pop Hits, either, since I have Kaleidoscope World and all of the subsequent LP's *except* Brave Words. I love that kind of thing. I liked some of Buckingham's songs and wasn't sure about the rest. Since then, I've gotten into other Fleetwood Mac records from the same period, and on going back to Tusk I was pretty impressed. (It's still too long, though.) The question is, does it sound substantially different on the big two-disc reissue that just came out? Tusk did sound kind of thin to me, but I know to some extent the funny sound is intentional. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 15:04:21 -0500 From: Dan Sallitt Subject: [loud-fans] Self-promotion My movie ALL THE SHIPS AT SEA is actually playing in a few places where loud-fans might live. Next weekend, it's playing at the Longbaugh Film Festival in Portland, OR: Sat., April 3, 6:30 pm Sun., April 4, noon Hollywood Theatre 4122 NE Sandy Blvd Portland, Oregon $8 all-day admission There's some info about the festival at http://www.longbaugh.com. There's a small possibility that the showtime of the film will be changed, so check the schedule on the web site before you come. I'll be at the Saturday screening, so feel free to say hello. Then the film will be at the Riverrun Film Festival in Winston-Salem, NC on Saturday, April 24 at 10 am. I don't know the location yet, but information will be up soon at http://riverrunfilm.com/home_2004.htm. I'll probably attend. Check with me if you want more info. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 15:19:47 -0500 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] more on audio quality At 02:39 PM 3/26/2004 -0500, Aaron Mandel wrote: >The question is, does it sound substantially different on the big two-disc >reissue that just came out? Tusk did sound kind of thin to me, but I know >to some extent the funny sound is intentional. I haven't bought the two-disc TUSK -- although eventually I'm sure I'll be picking up all three of those reissues -- but the original CD is one of the notorious botches of the early CD era. The sound is extremely squashed, as if (as is probably the case) they just grabbed the LP-EQ'ed tapes. (The sound of the original LP is a little odd on the songs recorded by Lindsey at home -- "The Ledge," "Not That Funny," etc. -- but otherwise standard '70s perfection, and should sound *much* better than they do on the original CD.) More annoyingly, for no good reason, the original CD substituted the single mix of "Sara" for the original LP version. The initial claim was that they had to do that to fit the whole album on one CD, but the total time of the original CD is 68:57 -- substituting the 6:26 second LP mix for the 4:37 45 mix still would have brought the total running time under 71 minutes, which even in the early days of the medium was still plenty short enough to fit on a disc. Clearly, someone just fucked up. Looks like the screenings are at Mitch and Shalini's local favorite haunt http://www.the-garage.ws/month/april.html In fact that's where the METAL CORNER pre-release party was held this past weekend. I'll make plans to attend. Can't miss that opportunity to finally meet you. The bonus material also helps make it probably the best initial investment of the three Mac reissues. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 17:11:53 -0500 From: glenn mcdonald Subject: Re: [loud-fans] more on audio quality While we're pondering Fleetwood Mac, anybody A/Bed the _Fleetwood Mac_ and _Rumors_ reissues, or spent any time with the bonus stuff on those? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2004 17:30:36 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: [loud-fans] minor self-promo I know there are a few people who used to read my web page, maybe some of whom even noticed when I stopped updating. I LOVE "Party in My Heart" and "Pink Frost". I loathe "Heavenly Pop Hit". As far as Chills albums, I only own Kaleidescope World, and I was disappointed with most of it. Based on this small bit of info, is there a Chills album I might prefer to KW? On an unrelated note, just finished reading Tom Perrotta's most recent book LITTLE CHILDREN. Mindful of Aaron Milenski's comment that "Perrotta's entire existence is based on the concept that once a guy marries all of the fun is over," well, he just wrote his first book mostly about people who are already married when the book begins.
