Silver & Gold is still one of the most hideous covers i've seen. The award, though, goes to CSN & Y's Live It Up. Limp hotdogs on the moon--good idea, guys. And the mention of bad cover art transfers immediatly made me think of those recent Let's Active reissues--what a shame they couldn't be bothered to make those look halfway decent. One of the highlights for me was seeing how some of the lesser known, recent tracks ended up winning over the crowd and becoming real highlights. Most of Missing Persons came from Zappa's band; Warren Cuccurullo ended up playing with Duran Duran; Adrian Belew was featured on Talking Heads' most popular albums...and of course Zappa himself, along with daughter Moon Unit, hit the charts with "Valley Girl." My initial impressions were of Postcard bands like Orange Juice and Josef K, mixed with bit of the old-is-the-new-new modernisms of The Strokes. The latter I suspect was heavily influenced by me spending a few days trying, unsuccessfully, to get into the 2nd Strokes album. On further listens I became more aware of how fluid the style of the album was especially in the opening tracks, and also got more of post-punk album as well. Over here they are definitely getting the benefit of the next-big-thing tag, although I'm not sure how easily some of their stuff will assimilate into the mainstream. btw - biggest bargain of the year so far, Graeme Downes - Hammers and Anvils from a couple of years ago. I've got several Verlaines albums and was never totally taken with them, but this effort knocks them all inmto a cocked hat. Brilliant range of songs and some real gems, such as Cole Porter. np The Stands - All Years Leaving (latest Liverpudlian 60s influenced band that are tipped by some to do rather well. They come across like a cross between the La's, Beachwood Sparks with a vocalist who reminds me most of Dan Stuart, although the guy would probably prefer Neil Young! Can't say I'm all that impressed though it has got a couple of good singles on it, like Here She Comes Again) > Has anyone else been listening to the latest "it" band, Franz Ferdinand? I'm glad someone else hears The Monochrome Set in FF, as that was my reaction to "Darts Of Pleasure". Pretty good record -- I was put off by the Strokes mannerisms, but after a few listens I started to feel that they only sounded like the Strokes when they couldn't muster the energy to do anything cooler, and they'd probably grow out of it. My perceptions are clearly shaped by my own tastes there. a ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 12:39:05 -1000 From: "R. I would like to imagine that the aural similarities to The Strokes are more because they share some of the same influences as oppsoed to because FF is aping them... They don't set my world on fire lyrically, but, damn if they can't find a hook and a catchy chorus. "Michael" is a particular standout for me, though I also dig "At The Matinee" and "This Fire." Anyhow, this and Lambchop's "Aw C'mon" and "No, You C'mon" have been the only things I've been listening to for a week or so. R. Everyone who thinks I'm a shill for any Tennessee alt-country or indie artist, take note: Lambchop is one that doesn't do much for me. When I first saw them, I was intrigued with their Vic Chesnutt-w/horns-n-wrenches-n-keening-weird-synth sound, and had generally favorable things to say about them, but as time's moved on, I've become less interested in their stuff, even bored a lot of the time. This is despite the fact that they boast Mark Nevers, Clockhammer's Matt Swanson, and Paul Burch among their vast and nebulous membership, and that they're tight with Yo La Tengo. I haven't heard their dual-release new ones, though, so maybe they're different. Regardless, I give Mr. Burch's solo career my full endorsement, especially BLUE NOTES and the recent ('03? '04?) FOOL FOR LOVE, both of which sound like a bunch of undiscovered country 78s from the '30s found in pristine condition in a vault. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 17:18:12 -0800 From: dc Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Perfect Square On Friday, March 19, 2004, at 08:14 AM, Bradley Skaught wrote: > I also wanted to recommend the new live R.E.M. (this was true of "Roadmovie" too -- the touring band got short-changed.) and what's with the repeated shot of the back of Bill Riefling's head? i have videotapes from European television of two club dates they did in support of Up, in Frankfurt and Stockholm, and i think they're better, certainly a better representation of the touring band -- it's actually revealed to be a six-piece. i am looking forward to the little documentary on the Stirling Castle shows, though, which is included on the DVD. i wasn't of it until this week. > As a huge fan of Up and Reveal, I > found that vindicating! too true, at least where Up is concerned. those songs are great! doug c vicinity of seattle ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 17:28:14 -0800 (PST) From: zoom@muppetlabs.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] two final bits of Zappa trivia > 2) The weird prominence of former Zappa musicians in minor '80s chart > music. TV doesn't understand a word that matters (but I'm not sure about TV on the Radio), Andy Alanis Morissette Changes Lyrics Of New Single Mon Mar 15,10:00 AM ET LAUNCH Radio Networks When Alanis Morissette (news) was putting the finishing touches on her new album, So-Called Chaos, due out on May 18, she decided to change the lyrics to her single "Everything," for fear that radio stations and television networks wouldn't play it because it could be considered offensive. Instead of singing "I can be an a--hole of the grandest kind," Alanis changed the words to "I can be a nightmare of the grandest kind." The singer told Billboard.com,"It got to the point, post-nipplegate Janet Jackson (news), where they were basically saying that they wouldn't play the song. People not hearing the song, based on my shooting myself in the foot by taking a stance of 'my artistic integrity will not be f--ked with' wasn't worth it. And I understand some parents not wanting their seven-year-old or daughter hearing the word 'a--hole,' even though they probably use it already." Alanis wasn't so sure that she wanted to use the word "nightmare." She said, "One of my worst fears would be for an old boyfriend of mine to consider me a 'nightmare.' I just feel like men use that word so much more than women do. Men say, 'Oh God, she's a nightmare!' I just want to shake them and say, 'What specifically are you talking about--that she required that you tap into your emotional self?' So it was good to use that word in the spirit of busting my own resistance to it." Alanis just shot a video for the single in Los Angeles. So-Called Chaos was produced by Sheryl Crow (news) and Pink collaborator John Shanks. She recorded it in a Santa Monica studio owned by singer-songwriter Jackson Browne (news). Other tracks on the disc are called "Eight Easy Steps," "The Grudge" and "Knees of My Bees." - --from http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1499&ncid=689&e=12&u=/launch/20040315/en_launch/217291 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 21:23:34 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Franz Fredinand Bradley Skaught wrote: >Has anyone else been listening to the latest "it" band, Franz Ferdinand? It's a record that I wish my old ex-Happy Egg mate and current Spongetone guy-Jamie Hoover, would take heed to. It's cool stuff and as much as I love Jamie, we both end up not liking each other's records... Oh yeah, another footnote in the life of Gil not getting hired! Too soon after my back injury, I asked Chris to consider hiring me. Of course I sold myself short "uh, I think I can play..." He made the right choice at the time.
