So what gives? Is this a legal ploy, trying to give maximum plausibility to the theory that the remaster was a new artwork in its own right so as not to miss out on royalties between 2100 and 2120? Is this far more common than I realize? The first wave of CD issues often had those ludicrous "NOTES" sections and prim little boxes around track numbers, turning records into museum pieces before their time. And I hated the packaging of the Pink Moon reissue a few years ago that dropped Drake's beautiful and wild color art in favor of an elegiac B&W photo of the artist himself; it felt like the Teacher's Supplement To 'Pink Moon' (For Educational Use Only). But, like, I'm *almost* positive I remember the world existing before 1999. I dunno - but just the other day I was commenting on the weird absence of songwriting credits on some releases - you'd think there'd be some actual legal requirement that such things exist. > But, like, I'm *almost* positive I remember the world existing before > 1999. Geez, Aaron: if *you're* turning into an old fart (and I remember when you were the youngest person on Loudfans), what does that make me? My latest satisfactory eMusic experience was the Moonbabies record -- sounded better than 'satisfactory', actually, but I haven't gotten around to a second listen on account of the Zappa profusion my collection is undergoing. a ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 16:56:52 -0500 From: Stewart Mason Subject: Re: [loud-fans] fogeyism At 04:44 PM 3/16/2004 -0500, glenn mcdonald wrote: >Aagh. Icicle Works' version is still safely ensconced on their album, and I'll make a note not to have one of those Charlie Kaufman-style memory wipes that will replace my memories of their song with this new version. I think we're going to be okay. I raced over there to see if they'd added it or not. OTOH, eMusic has added The Weakerthans RECONSTRUCTION SITE and Mr. T Experience's new YESTERDAY RULES in recent days, both worthwhile records that I purchased beforehand, naturally. b.s. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 16:11:40 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: [loud-fans] Zappa At 04:51 PM 3/16/2004 -0500, Aaron Mandel wrote: >on account of the Zappa profusion my collection is >undergoing. I'm late with this, but I thought I'd throw in a qualified vote for JOE'S GARAGE. I'm not saying that it's anywhere close to WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY, but the stuff on Act 1 has stuck with me for quite a while, and several are the kind of useful songs that start playing in your mind when presented with certain external stimuli. Driving past the Catholic school (it's on my way to work! Really!): "Catholic Girls" Females at shows attempting to wangle their way past security guards: "Crew Slut" The guy at the next urinal making pained sounds: "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" Acts 2 & 3 aren't as memorable in general, though 3 has one of my all-time favorite Zappa songs, the gorgeous almost-all-instrumental "Watermelon in Easter Hay." My first exposure to Zappa was "Dancin' Fool" (the disco parody from SHEIK YERBOUTI), which I believe to have been a bona fide top 40 hit single. it looks just like a Telefunken U-47, you'll love it, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 18:46:59 -0500 From: Dave Walker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] fogeyism On Mar 16, 2004, at 4:44 PM, glenn mcdonald wrote: > Aagh. I'm not saying that it's anywhere close to WE'RE ONLY IN > IT FOR THE MONEY, Well, it's turning out that I like 70s Zappa more consistently than the early Mothers stuff, so Joe's Garage is definitely on the list. At this point the question is less what Zappa I should buy -- I seem to be into it -- but what other musicians I might want to give a listen next. a ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V4 #79 ******************************
