I think anyone who's spent any time digging through the Beach Boys history gets a bit hardened and saddened by it. You come to expect certain things from certain players and you start answering interview questions before the subject even has a chance. Well, I finally read the new MOJO Smile article and i'm quite pleased to have been proven wrong in my assumption that "I knew what it was about"! It turns out that one of the Wondermints guys transferred all the Smile tapes to a laptop, went to Brian Wilson's house and played the whole thing for him with the intent of convincing him to perform it live. Not only did Brian go for it, he phoned Van Dyke Parks and brought him to, essentially "finish" it. And, so, right now Brian's over there in the U.K. performing Smile live with songs tightened up and completed as he and Parks seem to have intended. The article even suggests that a finished version of the album may appear at some point, although it doesn't claim to know how the unfinished recordings would be finished. Extraordinary, really--i've spent ages reading about Smile and listening to bootlegs and every false start, dead end, new found scrap, attempted release, etc. seemed to suggest that it would, in Brian's mind, never really be realized--that it was too late. Now, i'm not too concerned about the album ever being released the way it was meant to be, but it really is exciting to hear that at least it's been revived--revisited and given some thought and re-imagined by its creators. A great story and, really, a more fitting end for such a beautiful album.
