I always thought the Agent Orange song from the Enigma Variations comp was really cool, and used to put it on mix tapes in high school, but never sought out their stuff. Now that I'm in a "old is different than what we thought, more like new" period, I might do so. "living in darkness" is snotty youth anthems (you may have heard bloodstains' refrain "bloodstains/speed kills/fast cars/cheap thrills/rich girls/fine wine/i've lost my sense i've lost control i've lost my mind" (also apparently the offspring covered this. i had no idea.)), salted with a couple of surf instrumentals. "this is the voice" -- from which come the original versions of the tracks on the enigma variations comp -- is much different, really more an alternative rock album than a punk one per se. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 14:16:47 EST From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] punk taxidermy This Tuesday should see the release of an Agent Orange comp titled "Bloodstaind Hitz." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 13:46:22 -0800 (PST) From: "Joseph M. Joe Mallon jmmallon@joescafe.com 125 Records had a less-than-busy 2003, although the one thing we did release, the Loud Family Live 2000 DVD, has proven to be one of our most successful efforts to date. It just keeps selling, which I guess can either be chalked up to good word of mouth, or more people finally discovering the band. Aimee Mann plugged the Loud Family in Entertainment Weekly last year, which seems to have raised their profile a tiny bit. Anyway, the good news is that 2004 is going to be WAY more active. In April, we'll be rereleasing DIABOLICAL STREAK by San Francisco singer/ songwriter Jill Tracy. Jill released the CD on her own label in 1999, and it's gone through three pressings since then. She's garnered a tremendous amount of acclaim for her singular goth/cabaret style. It's gotten to the point where Jill is too busy to handle all of the distribution chores on her own, so 125 has stepped in to help. More info at jilltracy.com. Also coming up in 2004: it looks like we'll be signing our first-ever artist from across the pond, England's Statuesque, whose smart, catchy, delightful new album, CHOIR ABOVE FIRE BELOW, is currently in heavy rotation here at 125 HQ. And while it's still in the planning/writing stages, rumor has it that a trio of power-pop legends are joining forces to form a supergroup of sorts and will be recording an album for late 2004 release. It's all totally hush-hush, but should be worth waiting for! Now, this burst of activity means more inventory will be arriving at our tiny office. I looked into renting storage space, but was a little freaked out at the cost -- though I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, considering that here in the San Francisco area, a closet-sized apartment can rent for $1500/month. Anyway, instead of paying $$$ for storage, I decided to have a big blow-out sale. Basically, if I have more than a box of it, it's on sale. The Loud Family DVD, Anton Barbeau's import albums GULADONG and KING OF MISSOURI, and much more -- all priced to move. However, the sale is only for this weekend (a holiday weekend, so it ends the night of Monday the 16th). Everything'll be shipped out on Tuesday morning. 125 will enjoy more room for our new releases; you'll enjoy low prices. I typically don't react much to music which is essentially just someone and their acoustic guitar, but every song just feels riveting. Especially the lyrics. But, so, they're (he's?) awfully prolific, and there's no way I'll be getting every album. Anyone have any specific album recommendations? Or ones to avoid? The Extra Glenns? glenn wrote about the "noise" of All Hail West Texas, but I don't really hear that on Tallahassee. It's not the Beach Boys, but I wouldn't compalin about any hissing. Did their production change when they moved to 4AD? Odds that I can't spell the capital of Florida, 2:1. - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 16:23:09 -0600 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mountain Goats At 02:03 PM 2/14/2004 -0800, Michael Mitton wrote: >glenn wrote about the "noise" of All Hail West Texas, but I don't really >hear that on Tallahassee. TALLAHASSEE and the new 4AD one, WE SHALL ALL BE HEALED, are the first full-band/pro-studio albums the Mountain Goats have done. As for what's good, I think that the last three (the two 2002 releases, ALL HAIL WEST TEXAS and TALLAHASSEE, and the new 'un) are the best things Darnielle has ever done, demonstrating a consistency and maturity beyond anything he'd done before then. We'll see if I'm in a poor persecuted minority on this one or not... :-) I don't have the Extra Glenns stuff, but I can't think of anything to avoid, per se. NINE BLACK POPPIES is probably my next pick, because it's too short to be as hit or miss as the other Mountain Goats albums. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 20:18:25 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Mountain Goats On Sat, 14 Feb 2004, Miles Goosens wrote: > I don't have the Extra Glenns stuff, but I can't think of anything to > avoid, per se. The Extra Glenns album totally prefigures the sound of the studio MGs records -- I'm not crazy about all the songs, but I liked it, and it sounds like you would like it more. a ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 20:57:30 -0500 From: "Paul King" Subject: [loud-fans] DANGER!!!!! LF Content!!!!! To 125 and the list: Thanks to 125 Records for their timely delivery of their goods. I now have all LF albums except for "Slouching". The start of the DVD was hilarious; lots of fooling around, some good interviews, and certainly belongs as a centerpiece of any LoudFan's DVD collection. Gil Ray stole the show, IMO. The question remains ... would you view the DVD on your first date, assuming your date hasn't heard of LF? And would you play the "bonus" part of the DVD also? You DVD owners know what I'm talking about ... In the same delivery came PABARAT, which is in grave danger of being played to the Australian side of the laser disc. (I already did that several years ago to my Lolita Nation LP).
