I like everything except Mutiny. Actually I like part of Mutiny. Maybe it's because I'd see them about every year in Columbus when they used to tour. The Mutiny tour felt like a dud. I haven't seen them since "...Finally", but the CD seemed more like a return to form. I like Wonderlick OK, but I think it is so different from TMJ, I wouldn't really compare them. I guess mostly it is exactly because I share doug's biases listed above. Supposedly, TMJ is actually working on recording some new material. But with half of them on the left coast and half on the right, it will probably take awhile for anything to come of it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 11:16:30 -0500 From: glenn mcdonald Subject: Re: [loud-fans] re: eMusic (fwd) > [regarding Wonderlick] > * where the hell are the tunes? I'm as big a TMJ fan as anybody, and I'll admit that I relinquished my copy of Wonderlick in the big CD Purge. Lack of tunes, or maybe lack of personality. TMJ, whatever you thought of them, certainly had personality. The Wonderlick stuff never seemed to me to come to life. Nor the Its, the other TMJ side-project. Although there's a Cyndi Lauper EP b-side that's effectively her backed by the Its, and I adored that. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 11:53:50 -0500 From: "jer fairall" Subject: Re: Re: [loud-fans] re: eMusic (fwd) > I think Jer only likes the later stuff, if I remember correctly. I put it at #3 on the All-Time Top 10 list that I posted here last year, and if I were really being honest with myself instead of just instinctively filling the first two slots with my favorite albums by my two favorite artists, it might very well be my favorite album ever. I never picked up anything by the post-TMJ projects and am now kind of glad I didn't. I may still sample some of their stuff if I can find a convenient way to do so, but a TMJ without personality sounds pretty sad to me. I noticed the Plunderphonics album, and have been interested enough in what I've heard to check some of it out, but the two albums have 62 "songs", which would max out my Emusic monthly quota. Would anyone care hep me to find some of the more interesting individual tracks? Is there anyplace online that has the rundown of the source material on these discs? Stewart Mason wrote: > Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians -- LIVE AT THE CAMBRIDGE FOLK FESTIVAL / > This must have been recorded around 1992 or '93 based on the set list. August 1st 1993 (or 1st August 1993 as they'd say in Cambridge). I never picked this album up when it came out, but I've been enjoying it since downloading it from Emusic late last year (pre-quota). I even included a couple of songs from it on my latest swap disc for Michael Wells (a clear violation of "terms and conditions" subclause 5.2, but I like to live on the edge!). Anyway, if anyone is having trouble finding things to download, an album search for the word "live" will nearly always turn up something worthwhile, no matter where your musical tastes lie. A few years ago when Tim & Jay started their Wonderlick project, they ed offered the songs up as free downloads, along with an optional Paypal link for fans to donate $$ if they liked the songs. Tim Quirk later wrote in the SF Bay Guardian that he made more money from Wonderlick Paypal donations in three months than he'd made in the last 15 years with Too Much Joy. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 12:44:53 -0500 From: John Swartzentruber Subject: Re: [loud-fans] re: eMusic (fwd) On 2/10/2004 11:53 AM jer fairall wrote: >>I think Jer only likes the later stuff, if I remember correctly. >> >> > >No way! I don't know how you feel about Hootie and the Blowfish or Matchbox 20, so I'm not sure where you're coming from. Of course, I think that buying anyone's cd is a form of being duped to some degree. In any case, how could we compare the musical ability of Buffet to that of the people who bought Pavement cds without some knowledge of the musical output of the people who bought Pavement cds? And, morally, Buffet may be a swell fella - he may have been kind to his mother. I don't know him, so I can't say, and even if I did know him, I couldn't say, unless of course I observed the interaction between him and his mother, and even then there would remain some question about whether treatment of mothers is a good benchmark for moral superiority.
