[Jenny Grover Subject: [loud-fans] Top 15 for 2003 Here's my (not very cutting edge) list of my favorites from 2003. 1. Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak - No surprise here. Most of you have heard this one by now. This is easily the most compelling CD I have purchased in a long time. 2. New Pornographers - Electric Version - Another mainstream LoudFan choice. 3. Love - The Forever Changes Concert - I don't follow JeFFrey's rule about not choosing live albums. I just saw Arthur and his new version of Love play in San Francisco last weekend, and it was an amazing experience. It's hard to describe how delerious I was when the horns started up in the middle of "You Set the Scene." The CD captures the magic of the live show very well. 4. Idlewild - The Remote Part - The first song (You Held the World in Your Arms) is worth the price of the CD. My favorite song of the year. 5. The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow - Yet another typical pick for this list. 6. Buzzcocks - Buzzcocks - I haven't seen this one on any other lists, but I think it's a great return to form. 7. The Strokes - Room on Fire - I think this one is a lot more consistent than their first. However, if you hated the first one, you'll probably hate this one too. 8. Pernice Brothers - Yours, Mine & Others - I don't like this new one quite as much as their last, but it's nice to see Joe move in a slightly different (slightly more upbeat)direction. 9. Anton Barbeau - King of Missouri - Anton + the Bevis Frond! I was worried that this combination wouldn't work so well, but all of my fears were laid to rest once I played it. Anton rocks out more than usual, and this is not a bad thing. "Octagon" is a runner up for my favorite song of the year. 10. The Minus 5 - Down With Wilco - If you hate midtempo songs, you'll really hate this CD. Luckily, I don't suffer from this affliction. ...and the rest... 11. British Sea Power - The Decline of British Sea Power 12. The Polyphonic Spree - The Beginning Stages of the Polyphonic Spree 13. Hot Hot Heat - Make Up the Breakdown 14. Jupiter Affect - The Restoration of Culture After Genghis Khan 15. Dressy Bessy - Dressy Bessy Mike Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. What surprises me is that the disc is now starting to get airplay here in the Boston area, almost a year after its release (Allmusic says Oct 2002, but I swear that it must have been delayed in nationwide distribution, because I remember buying it as a brand new release in January or February 2003). As someone who collected Cure B-sides from 1989-1996 (I only got the singles with outtakes, not remixes), some of the tracks were even better than the singles or the albums that the singles came from. It was easy to see how they didn't fit onto the albums themselves. Maybe the big Cure Reissue campaign will bring forth even more great stuff... it's hard to imagine there being even more outtake material from those sessions. At Thursday 1/22/2004 04:32 PM, zoom@muppetlabs.com wrote: >Terri Nunn is, according to my source anyway, "a good-looking fiftysomething." Your source disagrees with other sources. According to the IMDB at least, Terri Nunn is a spry 42 (younger than I am!) which I find easier to believe than "fiftysomething". And yes, she does look better now than she did back in the day. Maybe it's because she's no longer succumbing to the 80s over-dressing or whatever. I've now watched the five episodes of BR that they've showed so far - luckily VH1 is rerunning them endlessly - and I gotta admit it's a nifty little piece of work. Though I wonder how much of it is fudged. After all, they say on every episode of Queer Eye that they're doing the whole thing in a day, yet in reality it takes 4 days. So is this reunion business really happening all in a week? With only one day or less of rehearsal? Also, I find it somewhat fakey when Aamer acts like he has to find out where the next ex-bandmember is from the one he's currently talking to. Somehow I think the producers have it planned out a bit better than that. All part of the illusion, I suspect. They also seem to be playing a bit fast and loose with what version of the band they are trying to reunite. It doesn't always seem to be the original version, since the Romeo Void drummer they featured was one of the later ones. So I guess that leaves either the "best known version" or the version that produced the seminal work(s) or One Big Hit. That leaves hope that we'll see Mr Gil instead of Michael Erwin in the Game Theory episode. (Aside: Hey Gil, be sure to tell us if a bunch of people with cameras and sound gear show up.) They don't even seem to be trying to get ALL the members from the lineup back. According to All Music Guide (Hi, Stewart), Chris Ruiz-Velasco was an original guitarist in Berlin along with Rick Olsen - where was he in the episode? Sounds like he was around as long as original drummer Rod Learned at any rate. But I quibble... Okay, one more quibble. In the Berlin episode, they make no direct mention (other than an allusion to Terri currently owning the "Berlin" name) that there is an active Berlin band doing shows, and which even put out an album in 2002 (VOYEUR). And yet the Flock of Seagulls and Klymaxx episodes make no secret of the same situation. There is definitely some judicious editing of what facts to include and what not to. But hey, they only have an hour. And sorry, but I don't think Pylon were ever popular enough to rate an episode. Did they even do any videos? I do like how there is actual suspense involved about who will play and who won't, and how in one episode there was no reunion concert at all. It's funner to invest in the show when you aren't guaranteed an outcome. I'm looking forward to Squeeze... Most of the info. has been confirmed, although there could be slight changes: Friday, February 6 Thee Parkside 1600 17th Street (at Wisconsin) San Francisco, CA 415-503-0393 www.theeparkside.com Admission is $7 Show starts about 9:30 - 10:00 pm. The Veronicas are opening. There may be another band, as well. Saturday, February 7 The Distillery 2107 L Street Sacramento, CA 916-442-9401 Admission is $5 Jupiter Affect starts at 10:00 p.m., followed by Brother Nafarious. The guys could also be doing a radio interview at KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. In addition, the band is playing a show in L.A. this week: Wednesday, January 28 The Derby -- for The Fold 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 323-663-8979 http://www.the-derby.com/ Admission is $7 Jupiter Affect will probably begin at 9 p.m., followed by Circus Minor. All shows are 21+. Please come out if you can -- especially L.A. folks! That one's an early show, so you won't miss out on sleep if you have to work early the next day. I plan to be in attendance at all shows and I would really enjoy meeting some of you, despite the fact that I rarely post to this list. Also, I know that this is a list about all-things-Scott and then some, so I don't want to annoy by posting such info. in the future. But don't worry -- you wouldn't know it by looking at the band's Web site, but Jupiter Affect now has an e-mail list of their own. If you'd like to be on it to receive future show updates and other news (and/or if you want to say "hi"), just contact me off-list. Or, you can just wait until their site gets redesigned and is regularly updated, which is definitely in the plans. I know it probably seems strange that I'm posting all this info., so I guess I should "out" myself by announcing that I am Jupiter Affect's new manager. I've kept the news from the list for a short while and would have continued to do so, but I couldn't figure out how to disemminate this info. without being all mysterious. I just hope it doesn't keep you all from freely expressing yourself and sharing stories about the band members in the future, as you have been. Likewise, I'd also ask that you're all gentle with me, as my experience with working in the industry only boils down to a measly few years as a college radio deejay in Iowa over ten years ago. In the short time that I've had this job it has been very exciting, but I frequently get overwhelmed by everything I have to learn and do. All I can say for sure is that it is definitely my most favorite job I've ever had (smile). Cheers!
