One is Statuesque, who are probably familiar to a lot of people here. In fact, the new mp3 is dated 2002, so maybe it's been there for a while and I just missed it... maybe it's even been posted here before. (It's definitely been added to the website since the album came out, though, and it was news to me.) http://www.statuesque.org.uk/are_you_sure.mp3 The other band is The Mitchells, who I'm not sure have come to the attention of the loud-fans hivemind before. They sound kind of like a cross between the Bats and Sonic Youth to me. (They sounded totally unique to me when I first heard them years ago; in the intervening time a lot of former Fugazi fetishists have made not-dissimilar music. But this is better.) Scroll to the last thing in the discography at http://www.themitchellsrock.com/catalog.htm I had no idea they even had a new album out. Of the songs I've heard from it, my favorite is actually "Flashlight Hunter", which you'd apparently be able to listen to if cdbaby.com were up at the moment, which it seems not to be. a ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 08:28:56 -0800 From: Steve Holtebeck Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Dreaded Sports Thread, New and Improved with Music Content! Anyway, somebody > get that man a Scott Miller CD pronto! I'm pretty sure Billy would get behind any band called GAME THEORY. Send those CDs to Oakland Athletics (c/o Billy Beane GM) Oakland Coliseum, 7677 Oakport Suite 200 Oakland, CA. 94621 - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 10:49:20 -0600 (GMT-06:00) From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Dreaded Sports Thread, New and Improved with Music Content! Van Duren - Idiot Optimism. This is a record made in 1979, but never released in the US until now. Van Duren played with Chris Bell's band and was a huge fan of Big Star, back in the day. It really shows and he is great. Best record I've heard in quite a while! Pure Southern pop with power, jangle and melody. Some of the tracks get some unfortunate misplaced synthesizer, but that's ok. His melodies and strong voice shines through. The liner notes compare him to Alex, Todd and Emitt Rhodes. Can't go wrong there. 2.The Darkness - Permission To Land. Joe turned me on to this, and I'm glad he did. A real throwback metal album, but with layers of coolness thrown in. The singer is completely insane. This rocks real hard. 3. Fellini-Rota - Toby Dammit/Satyricon/Roma soundtrack. The Fellini/Rota combination has never been surpassed and I'm particularly happy to have the score for Toby Dammit, finally. A great spooky film (part of a trilogy of horror based shorts in a release called Spirits Of The Dead). As usual with this duo, you get a whimsical, enchanting yet unsettling score. If you have no idea what this could sound like, you wouldn't be far off thinking of Combustible Edison. They covered some Rota before. 4. The White Stripes - Elephant. I still like this, but seeing the photo of what Jack White did to that other dude will forever taint my view of his work. I have no idea what could have lead to such a redneck, brutal ass whooping, maybe the dude deserved it, but somehow I doubt it. Bummer. 5.Blue Cheer - Outside Inside. Reissue of the greatest, most influential psychedelic hard rock record ever made. I think it was released in 1968. They are from San Francisco, but don't sound like it. 6. The New Pornographers - Electric Version. Really good. Want more Neko. 7. Jack Bruce - Songs For A Tailor. Reissue of his first solo LP after Cream (1969). He's my very favorite rock vocalist and this is a very interesting record. The writing is great and the songs are cool. Stacey remarked that folks just don't write songs like this anymore. A bunch of his stuff was re-released at the same time, and I love all of the first three. 8. Pet Projects - The Brian Wilson Productions. Another cool release featuring various songs and groups Brian Wilson produced in the mid 60's. The best being an absolutely stellar pop gem by Glen Campbell doing a song called Guess I'm Dumb. I think I should play this one for Scott if he hasn't already heard it! 9.Yes - Going For The One. Another reissue. Damn! 10. Every Word - A Tribute To Let's Active. One of the better tribute records I've heard. The standout track for me is Doug Powell's version of Waters Part. See ya! Gil __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
