Anyone know anything about where you can get a copy (VHS/DVD) of the PBS series "Rock and Roll" that ran a couple of years ago? All my searches are turning up blank. Maybe it's yet to be released. Larry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 09:55:08 -0800 From: "Douglas Stanley" Subject: [loud-fans] Pernice Show Well, Since I just received the latest digest and it only had one post, I guess I better get off my butt and do something about it. Night before last, I went and saw The Pernice Brothers at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. There was a whopping 30 people there to see what, as far as I'm concerned, is the finest band working these days. You might think that their delicate songs might not translate very well into a live setting, but they do. In fact, I don't think I fully appreciated how finely crafted the songs are until I saw them performed live. The lead guitarist, Peyton Pinkerton, makes all the difference in the world. His playing reminded me of Robert Buck (10,000 Maniacs) insofar as he wasn't really playing the song, but playing with it and around it. Joe also did a mini acoustic set prior to the encore which was delightful. They did stuff from every PB album, and while their written setlist included "Grudge F**k", they did not play it. I imagine the small turnout was somewhat of a disappointment to them. Regardless, they put on a fantastic show. I got a chance to speak with Joe after the show and I can't imagine meeting a nicer guy. If you see them coming anywhere near you, don't hesitate to go see them. I also need to send a shout-out to Michael Zwirn who, years ago, urged me to stick with The Pernice Brothers after my initial misgivings. Thanks, Michael. Guess what'll be at the top of my year-end list? Hey, that's always a nice thing to hear. The Pernice show at Lola's Room in Portland in July is my top show of the year as well - they are simply superb live, a pity about the small audience. Has anyone seen them opening for Malkmus? How was that? n.p. I see on the DFA site that they're producing an EP for Liquid Liquid, which, of course, makes perfect sense. I saw Liquid Liquid play live earlier this year and they about blew my head off. It was like 20 seconds had passed since their first incarnation, rather than 20 years. -d.w. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 19:25:44 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] She really did From Aimee M's list. This is also a nice plug, given that it's on Mann's label, United Musicians. I guess it's out locally; I suppose I'll have to find a copy tomorrow... CJ p.s. I just got home from First Avenue, where 3/4 of Trip Shakespeare rocked the hizzouse. (Yeah, yeah, college-y, earnest, smug, overwrought. Say what you want Two F's, I loves 'em.)
