Today at lunchtime, I headed out for a quick shopping run in the 100 Oaks area. For music, I hit Grimey's and picked up the apparently-domestic release of Matthew Sweet's KIMI GA SUKI, the Collector's Choice reissues of Tom Verlaine's FLASH LIGHT and Let's Active's BIG PLANS FOR EVERYBODY (they were out of stock on the EVERY DOG reissue, though they did have a used CD of the original IRS version), Cobra Verde's VINTAGE VIOLENCE, and the Loud-Fan tested & approved HEARTS OF OAK by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. On the drive back to work, I popped in the Ted Leo, and though that means I only got about 12 minutes of listening time with the disc, it has already made me 720 times happier than TREBLE IN TROUBLE did. And boy-oh, that first song has some Our Scott doppelganger moments. Thanks to glenn and doug for encouraging me to seek out more and better Leo. I'm already looking forward to hearing the rest of the album on the drive home. And speaking of Cobra Verde, NIGHT LIFE arrived last Saturday, I love it, and I guess that I'm now a stone cold CV fan. Anyone got any opinions on CV's predecessor, Death of Samantha? Worth seeking out if I like CV? My other stop was at the decidedly more corporate Media Play to pick up the FIREFLY DVD set. I hadn't preordered, and now I'm glad I didn't, since I got the set for $19.99! Fegs will have seen this account already, but here's what happened: When I walked into the store, I was greeted not only by the FIREFLY set, but a cheery little sign beside the shelved copies that read: FIREFLY: THE COMPLETE SERIES SALE: $19.99 Since the lowest I'd seen it was $29.99, I was taken aback. When the clerk rang up the purchase, it showed as $39.99, but I directed her to the sale sign, and, faced with this evidence, she gave me the set for $19.99. I do think the sale price was a typographical error, but just in case Media Play/Sam Goody/Suncoast mass-produced signs with this error (as opposed to a local clerk at our store gettin' happy with the sign-producin' software), it might be worth your while to peek inside and see if you can get that $19.99 price before they correct their mistake. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 2003 17:19:54 -0500 (EST) From: Aaron Mandel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Miles' Fogey Corner + FIREFLY DVDs fer cheap (mebbe)! I guess that means by now you may be in the middle of the title song, which I think may end up as my favorite song of the year. > And speaking of Cobra Verde, NIGHT LIFE arrived last Saturday, I love > it, and I guess that I'm now a stone cold CV fan. Worth checking out, but not a surefire hit -- at least, I don't find their high points as compelling as CV's, nor their filler as forgivable. Sounds like you may like CV *more* than I do, though (I can't say I ever go back to any record other than Egomania and now Easy Listening at all). aaron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Dec 2003 19:25:59 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Miles' Fogey Corner + FIREFLY DVDs fer cheap (mebbe)!
