The reviewer is a huge Scott Miller fan. Apparently he writes lengthily about what a genius Scott Miller in his recently published book, which I'll find out the info on and post here later. http://www.thejournalnews.com/theline/musicline/index.html Is anyone else going gaga over the new Belle and Sebastian record? Steve Matrick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Dec 2003 09:20:57 -0800 From: John Cooper Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) The book is SONIC COOL, and searching inside the book on Amazon yields some nuggets: [On Tris McCall:] "More importantly, he bears the melodic influence of Scott Miller of the Loud Family, who produced McCall's album and is by far the reigning maestro of sarcasto-Pop." "...the Loud Family, under the aegis of the venerable tunesmith Scott Miller, comes off as perhaps the most sophisticated "pop" band that ever lived. As the leader of Game Theory in the '80s, Miller proved that he was capable of the same delicate balance between extremely lovely melodies and slightly demented sentiments as Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, Elvis Costello, Alex Chilton, or Robyn Hitchcock--all of whom obviously influenced his pastiche-style songwriting technique. Where Miller outdistances them all is in his grasp of irony--the songs are beautiful, but they inevitably lampoon some aspect of the culture with biting accuracy. it's the perfect juxtaposition between old/new Pop/Punk that makes the Loud Family simply too good to be true in this day and age." > From: DOUDIE@aol.com > Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 11:18:37 EST > To: loud-fans@smoe.org > Subject: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) > > I thought some of you would find this Tris McCall review interesting. I don't understand the term "sarcasto-Pop" in this context. Scott almost never seems sarcastic to me. Usually the polar opposite. Then again, I don't understand the use of "reigning" here, either. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Dec 2003 14:46:03 -0500 From: Dan Sallitt Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) >> [On Tris McCall:] "More importantly, he bears the melodic influence of >> Scott >> Miller of the Loud Family, who produced McCall's album and is by far the >> reigning maestro of sarcasto-Pop." > > I don't understand the term "sarcasto-Pop" in this context. What I don't understand is how anyone could think that Liz Phair is solipsistic. If there was a word for "opposite of solipsistic," you could put Liz's picture next to it in the dictionary. (And she'd probably wear something inappropriate in the picture.) - Dan NP: The Orgone Box! Isn't this the same writer whose use of the terms "alb" and "eGay" made him the object of substantial hatred for multiple people on the list earlier this year? aaron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 12:46:06 -0800 (PST) From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) - --- Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey wrote: > On Tue, 2 Dec 2003, John Cooper wrote: > > > The book is SONIC COOL, and searching inside the > book on Amazon yields some > > nuggets: > > > "...the Loud Family, under the aegis of the > venerable tunesmith Scott > > Miller > > So, Gil - any dirt to dish on Scott Miller's aegis? I had misremembered it as the Rhino reissue, but judging from the "buy these great new Elektra albums!" inner sleeve, it looks like it was packaged in '81 -- the latest album depicted is the Cars' SHAKE IT UP. So it's likely that I bought in '81-'82 instead of '85-'86. Played it once last night -- initial reactions were: * It rocked a lot more than I remembered (this is a Good Thing). * Rex's comparison to Echo & the Bunnymen's OCEAN RAIN was on target for three or four of the songs (OCEAN RAIN also being fresh in my mind since I picked up the U.K. Bunnymen reissues to listen to during the drive to/from WV -- those are superb, btw). * FOREVER CHANGES may still not be something with which I'm enthralled. But I'm not hating it or anything, and I definitely liked it better than the last time I listened to it, which may well have been 20 years ago (urk!). At least two more listens coming up. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 19:53:39 -0500 From: "David Seldin" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) No. David - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2003 11:18 AM Subject: [loud-fans] Tris McCall (with Scott content) > Is anyone else going gaga over the new Belle and Sebastian record? > > Steve Matrick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 2003 19:23:20 -0600 From: cj Subject: Re: [loud-fans] B&S I really like the new Belle & Sebastian a lot. "The Man From Nantucket" just barely comes short of noting that nobody's twisting his arm. Also, Tris isn't so much of a conspiracy theorist that he doesn't feel bad when he finds himself associating with anti-Semites, which is kind of reassuring nowadays. The Belle and Sebastian fans might want to check out My Favorite's THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES. They opened for B&S in NYC, and were a great match. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V3 #350 *******************************
