Punchlines include "And therefore Julian Cope wouldn't like it," "I think my main value as a performer is that I can go back and forth from preachy to crabby very effortlessly," and "I might as well get in on some of the not paying Scott Miller action." Scott has insightful things to say about the role of rebellion in rock and the tendency to personalize the songwriter, among others. Oh, and Joe and I can do a virtual leaping chest thump (or whatever the hell that's called) as Scott mentions our dually copyrighted "Air Dorothies" term. No word on that Slade covers project, though. The main difference, to these ears, is that >>Verlaine could phrase in a little more of a supple way. While Sargent just >>banged out 8th notes. Well, yes. The way I think about it is that Sargent is to Verlaine as, say, those electronica-style jazz remix records (or St. Germaine or whatever) are to the original recordings: one little phrase tweaked with pitch-perfect Verlaine Jazzmaster whammy sound, repeated endlessly... the Television sound reduced to minimalism, like a sampled saxophone hook ripped from a really complex phrase. I rate Television among my very favorite bands ever, but for some odd reason the Bunnymen rise in my estimation a little bit each year. I haven't listened to it for a while but I must've found it "just alright" in the parlance of the day. Otherwise it would've made it harder for me to wholeheartedly recommend the record, however great side 1 is (and it IS great). But I actually like the long version of the Buffalo Springfield's "Bluebird", so what do I know... I think I like early, naive meandering jams because they're, well, early and naive. Rex, eager to add that the "free-jazz" version of "Eight Miles High" on "Untitled" makes me want to kill myself more times than I ever possibly could... like five or so. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Dec 2003 13:45:44 -0500 From: Stewart Mason Subject: [loud-fans] disc swap cleanup Two things, now that I've actually gotten on top of things enough to actually have time to devote to swap discs: 1. Who was it who sent me the two discs entitled "Mellow...?" (which I adore, by the way) and "All Over the Place"? 2. Michael Wells, I have to offer you a sheepish apology: at some point in the weeks since I got your disc, as it was languishing with the others on top of my desk, it was somehow snapped in two before I had a chance to listen to it. Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey offered up a rare acoustic show a week ago Sunday at a benefit show for Alejandro Escovedo. They were accompanied by Jon Wurster on drum (yes, singular) and someone who's name I did not catch on upright bass. Chris looked about the same as he's ever looked, but with some added gray hair. Peter was almost unrecognizable in a shaved head, goatee and 50's retro black glasses. Here's their set: Angels (dedicated to Alejandro) Here Without You (Gene Clark) The Child in You The Lord of the Manor (Everly Bros.) Close Your Eyes She Was the One Christmastime And they were the only band of the entire event that did an encore, a practically unrehearsed "From a Window to a Screen". They sounded fabulous together. I hope something comes from this. At least I've heard that Chris Stamey has been working on a live Mavericks release compiled from tour recordings he has from the '91 Mavericks tour. No ticks. But speaking of hairless heads, Cheetah Chrome and the rest of Rocket from the Tombs are currently on tour with additional guitar mayhem provided by Richard Lloyd. If the 3 song advance I got is any indication, the shows and forthcoming Feb. By that time Peter and Will Rigby were the only original band members. Both of these are gonna be hard to find and regularly fetch hi $ on Ebay. On these albums they had more of a straight up American rock sound with a hint of country and soul. ther are two other later releases which assembled various odds and ends and would generally interest collectors only. The one collaborative album they did in 1991 called MAVERICKS was generally pretty good through and through with some of Stamey's songs actually being some of the best. I never get tired of listening to "Geometry". "Angels" was the big song on this one, but ther cover of Gene Clark's "Without You" is excellent. You can just about always find this one on the cheap too. My favorite and possibly the most accessible Chris Stamey album is IT'S ALRIGHT. Songs like "Cara Lee" and "Real Big Time" would have easily fit on the first two dB's albums. Interesting that you are less inclined towards Stamey's work, because to me there are a lot of similarities between Chris Stamey and Scott Miller's work. I think it was in the $5 rack - maybe Janet can run an errand for you (since she has some CDs to sell there anyway...) Anyway, Aaron, if you like those songs for the songs, Larry's probably right. But if the somewhat quirky arrangements are what grab you...well, apparently Stamey's songwriting doesn't get you, but he's also responsible for the quirkiness of the arranging - judging from the lack of same after Stamey's departure.
