That said, I like the really whacked out albums (CROWN OF CREATION and AFTER BATHING AT BAXTER'S) best, though I think VOLUNTEERS is the peak of their performance and songwriting. Generally, or particular songs? Is it the sound of the voices, or the particular notes they sing? Me, I like the blend of voices - and at times, they got really out there in terms of the actual harmonies, notably on "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon.": I read once that Kantner had been listening to Bulgarian folk music (with loads of seconds - fifteen years later, all the rage...) and tried to get that sound. But then, I've always been a fan of discord. ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: "am I being self-referential?" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 09:11:53 -0500 From: "Aaron Milenski" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Questions for the Very Old Among Us > > Am I the only one here who find the Airplane's harmonies so annoying > > that their music, good as it is, becomes unlistenable?? >Generally, or particular songs? Is it the sound of the voices, or the >particular >notes they sing? Generally. Always. It's the sound of the voices (I think they don't mesh), and the way the harmonies are "lazy" (i.e. often come in slightly before or after the lead vocal.) It may be the notes too, but I don't have perfect pitch so I don't know if Grace is out of tune or just annoying. I like all of their voices perfectly well by themselves. I just think they sound awful together. I have the same reaction to X, a very well-loved band that I just can't stand. I also have that reaction to the Grateful Dead, but even their groupies admit *they* can't sing, right? :-) I think the Airplane's vocals are that way on purpose...I do think much of it is inventiveness and creativity. It just grates on me, personally. Has anyone here heard the 60s folk-rock act Blackburn and Snow? They also rub me the wrong way, and some people think they're among the best harmony singers of the era. _________________________________________________________________ Is there a gadget-lover on your gift list? I really like the blend of voices too, particular the Kantner/Slick combo. Later Doe/Exene would remind me a lot of them. I thought all their albums were rather spotty with the exceptions of VOLUNTEERS and CROWN OF CREATION which I've liked the best. When it came out I really enjoyed THIRTY SECONDS OVER WINTERLAND and still do for the versions of "Have You Seen the Saucers" and "Feel So Good". Can still remember riding around in my friends Mercury Cougar listening to it on the 8-track. And Jeffrey, since you brought it up, I also have many of those side project, early Starship albums. And of those I really liked BARON VON TOOLBOOTH AND THE CHROME NUN for three songs, Slicks overtly sexual "Across the Board", "Flowers in the Night" with help from Jerry Garcia and majestic "Sketches of China". I can't even bear to check on Westerberg's stuff any more for fear that it might be even more disappointing than I expect. And I get extra wary when rumors of a "return to form" start to swirl. Same deal with TAFKABlackFrancis. Steve: >>As I've said before, I think Baxter's is horribly underrated when the >>best of lists are made. I think my copy of Crown of Creation has as its cover an photo reproduction of a used copy of the vinyl jacket, complete with what appear to be two torn-off strips of masking tape. Well done! So, the God songs... that reminded me last night of "Jesus Is Just Alright", which is supposed to be a pretty celebratory song, right? But by the time I first encountered it, probably in the late '80's on The Best of the Byrds Volume 2, the title sounded distinctly sacreligious to me. As in "Jesus Is, Mehh, You Know, I Can Take Him or Leave Him." So when did "just alright" go from meaning "hell yeah" to meaning "whatever with that?"? Sometime in the seventies, I guess, but it's been a solid statement of indifference for as long as I can remember. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 10:20:40 -0800 (PST) From: Phil Fleming Subject: [loud-fans] Something finally happened...
