The immortal Leather Nun, of course! Speaking of immortals, has anyone said "God" by Prince? I've got the original 45 from back in the day, but it's also on the "B Sides" disc of THE HITS/THE B-SIDES, if a CD is required. It'd be a must for my GodTape. I guess the dialogue between Prince and God at the end of "Temptation" would also count, though it's one of my least favorite parts of the usually super mid-'80s Prince catalog. There's that awful Crowded House song about God and his weiner dog, from WOODFACE. Some more that I like: Roxy Music, "Psalm" Echo and the Bunnymen, "All in Your Mind," "New Direction" um, other people have called a lot of the rest (including Lyle Lovett's still-stunning "God Will"). later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 15:11:37 -0600 From: Chris Prew Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: Like, oh my God! Yr thutts? Hey, didn't I catch a lot of flack somewhere (here or Fegmaniax, I guess) for saying the same thing about Weller a few years ago? Of course, this could have been as far back as '96 or something. I just remember several people insisting that I was completely wrong and that Weller sings exactly the same way now, which *amazed* me -- I mean, even when the Jam tackled R&B/Motown in covers ("Heatwave") or inspired-by originals ("Beat Surrender"), he still sounded like Paul Weller, but since he hung out his solo artist shingle, his voice has been 100% ersatz soul, like Rick Astley singing better material... From the handful of Weller solo tracks that I've heard, it's entirely possible that his songwriting might have recovered from the Style Council (Stewart's recent, more positive reassessment of them duly noted, and I'll buy that they may be so reviled that they've actually become sorta underrated, but I also think that things slid into didacticism and dilettante-ism really quickly), but I was so appalled by Weller's new soul-man singing voice that I really couldn't stick around for full listens to WILD WOOD or STANLEY ROAD. Speaking of not getting things... >..Jeff, thinking that it's near time to start rough-drafting ye olde best-of >lists and that off the top of his head _Hearts of Oak_ is odds-on fave After the Leo raves, which said all the right things to pique my interest, I decided to test the waters when I came across the TREBLE IN TROUBLE EP for a good price. Gotta say that nothing really stood out for me, unless you want to count wincing at "Little Girl in Bloom," but I guess I should blame that one on Phil Lynott instead of Leo. So I guess I have two Leo questions: 1) Do TYRANNY OF DISTANCE and HEARTS OF OAK represent significant advances in songwriting/performing? I'm hoping the answer is "yes." 2) Are the above records going to remind me as much of '90s rock that I didn't warm to (GbV, Archers of Loaf) as this EP did? I'm hoping the answer is "no." later, Miles last played: my homegrown Springsteen best-of cassette from a few years ago (driving a rental with only a cassette player; my regular car's in the body shop after being rear-ended on 11/4) last watched: Disc 1 of THE UPRIGHT CITIZENS BRIGADE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON. Laughed ourselves to death, and "The Little Donny Foundation" is still waiting for us on Disc 2. Completely underrated, and I'd urge fans of THE KIDS IN THE HALL and MR. SHOW to give the show a shot now that it's on DVD. DAILY SHOW fans take note: Rob Corddry, though not billed as part of the brigade, has bit parts in several episodes. Ironically, the one where he gets the most screen time is one where he doesn't have a line -- he's in almost every audience shot of "Saigon Suicide Show." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 18:29:35 -0500 From: glenn mcdonald Subject: Re: [loud-fans] two queries > I came across the TREBLE IN TROUBLE EP for a good price There's no such thing as a "good" price for this or the first album, in my opinion. I'd mentioned the song "Son of Jesus" by Jefferson Airplane the other day - and does anyone know if, anywhere, there's a non-bowdlerized version? Every version I've been able to find (including my copy, a '70s-vintage LP) features a number of edits: the initial consonant of "bastard" swallowed a couple of times, an obvious overdub creating the nonsensical line "so you think young Jesus Christ / Never [smiled] a lady"; and the word "bastard" run in reverse in its last occurance just before the outchorus (that last being a particularly sloppy edit). It's obviously the religious content that scared off RCA; the year before "up against the wall motherfucker" presented no problems (except in the lyric sheet, where the word "fred" was, rather amusingly, substituted). ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Solipsism is its own reward :: np: swap CD from Stef's (The Rival List) - actually, the dear23 (Posies) list swap: right now, Jay Bennett & Edward Burch :: --Crow T.
