My favorite recent add on eMusic is SONGS FOR DARLA THE FAKE GIRL by My First Days On Junk. Unbelievably crap band name, but the album sounds like a cross between mid-period Yo La Tengo and the Athens wing of the Elephant 6 collective. I just downloaded a Dramatics best-of last night because I got a hankering to hear "In the Rain," one of my favorite soul ballads from the '70s. And, to be fair, Earle's actually lost a lot of his post-rehab weight, so he probably didn't need to grow back the beard to avoid being mistaken for Wynonna. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Nov 2003 17:23:56 -0600 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] two queries 1. Picked up a couple of CDs recently, and suffered a moment of vertigo-inducing cultural 180 when the last track on an old, obscure Momus album (Hippopotamomus) led directly to Ted Leo's "Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead" (unless I've reversed the title, which is about what the hell anyway). 2. Speaking of Leo, why is it that some white rock guys inspired by classic soul and R&B can be so brilliant, dead-on, and passionate (classic Graham Parker, Leo, Spoon, and Elvis C. circa _Get Happy!!!_) while others use the same recipe and end up on an endless, horrifying spiral to deep suckitude? (The early '80s was full of example - I'll just use the sad decline of Paul Weller as synecdoche.) I was going to say "talent" and "intensity" except I think Weller had buckets of both early on...perhaps the difference is being inspired by vs. thinking you actually *are* a classic soul/R&B guy (which none of these folks is).
