I went poking around for a recipe, but the best I could do in the time I have is guess Gil must've been at the Camellia Grill for that fabulous pie. Incidentally, an All The Web search for "fried pecan pie" brings up 3 hits, the last of which is a fegmaniax posting. Small fried pie world. I absolutely love pecan pie - I have it very rarely, though, since otherwise I'd look like Mr. Creosote - and once a friend, knowing that I also like chocolate, decided to bake a chocolate pecan pie for a dinner for the bunch of us. Even though that was a very kind gesture, the two together were kind of overkill and didn't work well together for me. I am now trying to imagine *frying* the whole thing...good lord! Of course, as a good Texas boy, I find a good pecan pie -- the caramelly kind, not the ones with a sort of egg custard consistency -- to be the ne plus ultra of desserts, right up there with the buttermilk pie. But when you start doing add-ons like chocolate, or this horrific thing I saw on a menu once that was half pecan pie and half cheesecake, it's all just too much. Alton Brown made a sweet potato pie on Good Eats last night that was topped with a cup of toasted pecans. Again, don't be mixing your pie metaphors. Sweet potato pie, good. Pecan pie, gooooooooood. But just because hamburgers and tuna melts are both good sandwiches, that doesn't mean a tuna melt burger would be awesome. I've never made a damn thing in it. However, fond of bread pudding and faced with several dozen bagels left over from a conference a couple weeks ago, Andy and I developed a much-less-gross-than-it-sounds hybrid we modestly call bagel pudding. I can't make any claims for donut pudding. Anyway, everyone heat your ovens: Doughnut Pudding 6 stale cake doughnuts or crullers (do not use jelly doughnuts)* 1 cup raisins 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 1 cup heavy cream 3 tbsp. sugar Chop or break doughnuts into small pieces. Mix with raisins. Beat the eggs until frothy, then beat in milk, cream and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Grease baking dish, add the donut/raisin mixture. Pour egg mixture over all and let stand for 15 minutes. Set dish in roasting pan containing enough boiling water to come halfway up side of pudding dish. Place in 375 degree oven until center is set, about 20 minutes. *This instruction is actually part of the recipe. This cookbook also features a chart listing 22 major cookbooks and the total fat included in all their recipes expressed in number of Mallomars, quarts of mayo, and various other useful units of measurement.
