Jen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 04:12:41 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: [loud-fans] beware the mysteries of emusic Well, well. I got a reply. Apparently they terminated my account because for some reason unbeknownst to me, they think I was using a remote machine to choose and download music. My reaction was, "huh?" But even more annoying is the fact that customer service says it can't do anything about it and gave me the address of the general manager, stating that I have to send him a letter by postal mail and that customer support can't provide me with any assistance or information. So, now I have to wait for snail mail, I lose the last of my unlimited download days, I may not even be allowed to resubscribe, and I still have no earthly idea what is going on that they think I was using a remote machine. So, let this serve as a sort of warning to you all that you may be treated nastily (and their form letters can be quite nasty in tone), have your service cut off and be barred from resubscribing, without your doing anything wrong. If you have another credit card and another e-mail address (and with hotmail and the like, that's easy), I'd just resub using different info. Of course, if you had lots of stuff on your "already downloaded" list whose files you haven't gotten yet, that wouldn't be a good option. ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: As long as I don't sleep, he decided, I won't :: shave. Half the time it sits on "Requesting File..." forever or I get "Error: Server returned an invalid code". I have to keep trying to download the same songs over and over again until it works. I hope that's just because they've been overloaded with everyone to download stuff before the new rates kick in, but if it still keeps happening after that, I'm definitely canceling my subscription. uh, yeah. what Rog said. they haven't written me back about my request to join emusic whatever-the-heck they called it either. unless my spam filter caught it, of course, which has been a problem with their communications from the get-go. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 07:14:18 -0800 From: "W. David Barnes" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] beware the mysteries of emusic I finally got sick and tired on the error messages, empty downloads and lack of customer service response and went digging for a phone number on their website. I finally found one for their public relations department and left a lengthy message with an add on that said I'd leave a message a day until I got a response of some kin. Yesterday I got not only an e-mail response but a phone call from a very nice customer service representative that went a long way toward calming me (it helped that I got a free month out of this). No new ground (they're basically hosed until the 8th) but it does look like there is a bunch of new content on its way, the message boards will eb abck up either on the 8th or around the 8th and downloading will return to a mostly okay mode then too. Glenn, 13(!) years ago, when I got married, I had the same problem you're facing. I had 600 LPs I had to get rid of. Granted, 13(!) years ago, vinyl was somewhat more popular than it is now, but what I did with them was (I felt) sheer genius. I sold them all to my best friend for an unbelievably low price. That way he was happy and the albs' were always there in case I ever needed to borrow them. We even had an agreement that I could purchase "X" amount back if I found I couldn't live without them. And to answer your next question: All the porn mags went in the garbage. The huge purge of unnecessary objects is underway at my house, in celebration of the imminent co-occupation of my house by my fiancee. Departing from my life will be a whole lot of books, which I understand how to unload, and a daunting number of CDs, which I can probably figure out. But I'm at a loss for what to do with the 85% of my old vinyl LPs and 45s that is currently stacked in boxes in my living room. I know some places that sell used vinyl, of course, but it's hard to imagine that they'd pay me enough to defray the labor of transporting the stuff there. Looking through completed auctions on eBay is doesn't appear that large vinyl lots for personal pickup command much attention, and there's no way I'm going to have time to deal with them one by one. I'd happily settle for a creative idea, rather than a monetary one. I guess my best thought so far is to offer the whole set as a prize in some odd contest on my web site, and then hope somebody actually enters. Have you considered (and this goes for your other items as well) a good old fashioned yard sale? Vinyl hawks have astonishing homing instincts for those things. Whenever I find one with records going for 5 cents to a quarter I pick up at least three or four... usually things I have on cd, but I figure a couple of cents is worth it for a copy of the artwork that can be seen without a lupe. Last time some jerk had already beaten me to a copy of the Basement Tapes. >>"Generally, if I like an artist, I have to own every record. Not that I >>necessarily play them.
