Departing from my life will be a whole lot of books, which I understand how to unload, and a daunting number of CDs, which I can probably figure out. But I'm at a loss for what to do with the 85% of my old vinyl LPs and 45s that is currently stacked in boxes in my living room. I know some places that sell used vinyl, of course, but it's hard to imagine that they'd pay me enough to defray the labor of transporting the stuff there. Looking through completed auctions on eBay is doesn't appear that large vinyl lots for personal pickup command much attention, and there's no way I'm going to have time to deal with them one by one. You could donate them for an art project at a local school. The kids could then put them in an oven at around 200 degrees, which should be enough to melt the vinyl, and they could make dishes out of them. OR Got a shotgun? The discs should fly fairly well. Anyone else >running into this? That's odd. I'm not having any trouble at all. On the other hand, last night I finally bit the bullet and signed up for the XL service -- given that I've downloaded something like 30 albums in the last month, it seems like I should at least be able to clean out my stash in the next couple of months, and then downgrade, at a reasonable per-album price point. I figure that as long as I'm downloading over 10 albums per month, under $5 a pop seems entirely reasonable. What's odd is that I filled out the form linked to from the official announcement, then I received an email that said "Thanks for expressing your interest, a customer service rep will be contacting you shortly to assist you with changing your rate plan." This suggests to me that they might be beta-testing different rate plans and price points, which is probably a good idea. Then, about ten minutes later, I went to download a song I'd missed off of the album I was in the process of downloading and got a "server down for maintenance" page. Five minutes later, it was working again, and I noticed that I wasn't having as much trouble with download errors and stalled requests as before. So clearly, by signing up for the XL plan, I ruined it for everyone else! Latre. --Rog * - "Okay" is a relative term. Ever since they announced the new system, I've had an incredibly hard time downloading anything. Half the time it sits on "Requesting File..." forever or I get "Error: Server returned an invalid code". I have to keep trying to download the same songs over and over again until it works. I hope that's just because they've been overloaded with everyone to download stuff before the new rates kick in, but if it still keeps happening after that, I'm definitely canceling my subscription. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 12:31:51 -0800 From: John Cooper Subject: Re: [loud-fans] WTF! > From: "Roger Winston" > > * - "Okay" is a relative term. I went on a major binge last month (enough to get the Important Alert email) and had these problems as well. Also, I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but as I've gone through my downloaded songs, I'm finding that quite a few of them stopped downloading after getting only a few seconds' worth of the song. I never cleared out the download manager until all tracks said completed. I tried to re-download a couple of the tracks individually and got the same results. I have no idea how many songs I didn't get, as it'll be months before I get through everything I've downloaded. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I just ran a search on my current pile of downloaded stuff and found two broken files out of about 800. I think I also remember hearing about this happening to people back when there were eMusic message boards. My biggest problem over the past couple of weeks has been with empty downloads (they show as completed but are 0 kb files). I either get this or error messages and since thier customer service is all auto-response and non-existent outside of that, figure I just need to cool my jets until they move to the new model and hope things work. In the meantime when I find stuff I download it anyhow becuase when they do go to the new model, I'll still be able to get those missing tracks without it counting against my monthly total. David B. I've had a couple of bum files - since I too went on a massive binge this last month, it'll be quite some time before I figure out if I missed any. You should know that if you've downloaded the .emp file, even if the mp3 itself is defective, you're counted as having downloaded that file...which gives you rights to download it again in perpetuity (or, uh, until they change the rules). This means that, say, if you tried to download a whole bunch of stuff but couldn't get the actual files, you don't need to sign up for advanced levels just to be able to get the files after 11/8. At least, that's how I read the service agreement...no one sue me if things turn out differently. ..Jeff, staying with but at the low-level plan...frankly, because I have too much DL'd stuff I haven't even listened to, so I probably will download next to nothing for at least six months. Just steer clear of Jim Lewis, Andy Ark. moves toward executing drugged man By Kelly P. Kissel Nov. 4, 2003 | LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Arkansas' attorney general has determined that appeals have been exhausted for a death row inmate who is forcibly given anti-psychotic drugs that make him mentally competent to be executed, the governor's office said Tuesday. Charles Singleton most recent appeal failed in the U.S. Supreme Court in October, when the justices refused to review a lower court ruling that the forced medication was acceptable. That court determined it was part of appropriate treatment for Singleton's paranoid schizophrenia. Attorney General Mike Beebe delivered a letter to Gov. Mike Huckabee on Monday certifying that there are no other obstacles to Singleton's execution, Huckabee's office said. Singleton's lawyer, Jeff Rosenzweig, has said it is in the inmate's best interest to take the medicine until the resulting sanity puts him on the path to execution. He argued that, at the point an execution is set, it becomes unconstitutional to keep Singleton artificially sane. A divided 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis disagreed in a 6-4-1 decision, and the Supreme Court refused to consider the argument. "Of course, Singleton's sanity is always going to be an issue," Rosenzweig said Tuesday. "He has a waxing and waning psychological issue. Last week, he was sane. How he'll be next week, we don't know." Singleton, the longest-serving inmate on Arkansas's death row, was convicted in the 1979 stabbing death of a grocer. Huckabee spokesman Jim Harris said Tuesday that Singleton's case would receive a full review and that the inmate's medical history would be considered before a final decision on the execution is made. The governor will take 10 days to review the case and then set an execution date for 40 to 60 days later, which would be no later than mid-January. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 2003 19:01:14 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] WTF!
