Someone (Steve Schiavo?) mentioned to both lists recently that the compiled XTC tribute CD _King for a Day_, chockfull of MP3s, was available. However, following the links posted, and using the PayPal address listed, I'm getting no response: PayPal has followed up with a notice that my funds are going unclaimed. So: does anyone know who's handling the orders for this project, and if s/he has another e-mail address that's actually monitored on a regular basis? Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the lack of content by saying that I know nothing about obscure computing platforms and have nothing more to say about eMusic. ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Californians invented the concept of the life-style. :: This alone warrants their doom. :: --Don DeLillo, _White Noise_ np: a bunch of noisy McLusky mp3s ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Oct 2003 18:27:05 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: [loud-fans] Broadcast > Anyone hear and have comments on the new Broadcast album? It's wonderful, of course. It's a clear and logical progression from the _Noise Made By People_ material. The melodies and the cushiony, stately sound are just as present as before, but they aren't afraid to get a little noisy, buzzy, and clanky, so that people who liked them a bit but thought that things were a little _too_ pretty in the past will find some new rough edges to hold their attention. They've pretty thoroughly outgrown the Stereolab comparisons, too. They're going to be playing live here in a week or so, and I guess there'll be a tour CD to buy there, too. :) -d.w. still trying to figure out how I forgot Trish Keenan on my "voices to marry" list from a few weeks back ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Oct 2003 18:22:06 -0500 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: [loud-fans] Re: XTC tribute??? D'oh!! It's the old "one" vs. "L" problem. All in favor of revising the shape of lower-case "L" say "aye"... Or putting a slash through the numeral - either way, I don't care. ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: When the only tool you have is an interociter, :: you tend to treat everything as if it were :: a fourth-order nanodimensional sub-quantum :: temporo-spatial anomaly. :: --Crow T. Digging my way out of the absolute quicksand of 70's music I've been mired in for most of my past and present life, I finally got to hear Stew's new solo effort and while I love the concept of artists going small on us, this one doesn't work for me. (damn...there's a sentence for you!). I like him best with full-on band and the sonic dynamics that come with that territory. It's funny, but it seems that with every successive show I've seen, the band would keep subtracting members until now it looks like it's Stew and Heidi and a hired gun for a drummer. Don't get me wrong, I still love Stew and Heidi, I guess I just miss the fuller sound with a full-time keyboard player. I think Scott could really make a great small record, I know he's got the equipment sitting in his home, but I guess he would need the desire, and of course, the time, now that lovely Valerie is crawling all over the place! Speaking of '70's rock, I cannot stop playing those damn Yes reissues. Grrrrr . I am a little surprised that the ones I'm liking the most are Tales and Going For The One. I really cannot think of a more Glorious bit of rock music than the last part of Awaken. Alan White is a great drummer, but he sure gets an ugly drum sound. I will always be spoiled by Bill Bruford's sound. And his playing. (note to self: I will NEVER convince Stacey that prog. is great. I will never convince her that the first 3 Grateful Dead albums are great, so JUST QUIT TRYING GIL!!!!!!!!) Ok, back to the now. If you haven't ordered the LF DVD, please do so now! I saw it last night and Danny has made a great and fitting last look at the band. It's balanced so well with the many songs and smaller bits of fun stuff. The performances rock, the interviews with the band are interesting and informative, and the sweet tributes by some of the fans are very touching. I want to thank Joe and Sue for this remarkable labor of love. Oh yeah, and note to Roger: I fought hard for the widescreen aspect ratio, but it fell on deaf ears. Gil Who is damn proud of the fact that I live in Alameda County, California. The murder rate may be high, but we know damn well how to vote..... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Are you telling me it's *not* widescreen?? Guess I'm going to have to send mine back... Thanks for trying anyway Gil, it's appreciated. Musical note: I gave into the hype and bought CHAIN GANG OF LOVE by The Raveonettes (cheap disc). Kinda reminds me of dull Jesus & Mary Chain, but maybe it's a grower. The sounds added to make it sound like it's on vinyl are really annoying. OTOH, it is CD Text enabled, so my car stereo displays the song titles like it does for MP3 CD-Rs. I more enjoyed Hot Hot Heat's MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN, which I bought at the same time and which was just as cheap. Anyone else having trouble downloading from eMusic today? Download Manager keeps sticking on "Requesting File..." for me. I'm guessing their servers are really overloaded with people trying to get as much as they can before the new plan kicks in. What's really weird is that some titles (not perhaps the most obvious ones) were really persistently unavailable - I finally gave up on one Ilkae track and found it online instead (thanks Dave Walker for the suggestion - oh, and I just downloaded each goddamned track individually as a workaround...really irritating, but it works). I've found it cutting out a lot too - but then, my connection's been squicky lately anyway. Gil is absolutely correct on Yes and the first three Grateful Dead albums, by the way. And, and I can't remember if it was here or in a private e-mail, but Joe directed me to http://www.thedarknessrock.com...and, uh, you know when you saw Spinal Tap, there was always one guy who didn't quite get that it was parody, and kept saying things to his girlfriend like "that's just like our band" and "our guitarist is even hotter than that"? What worries me is that I actually like it. I cannot imagine a cheesier video than the first two, with the spaceship and everything, but the songs are pretty damned good - although I can't judge details, since my connection and capacity still aren't up to doing a good job on streaming stuff (prob'ly should have shut down everything else).
