Most notably, The Extra Glenns. Their song "Ultraviolet" blew me away, so I downloaded (legally) a song called "Going to Marrakesh". Holy Cow. Now, I know who The Extra Glenns are, but I can't figure out why I like them. What I've heard from The Mountain Goats sounds just a little too strident and difficult to listen to. I know there's some Franklin Bruno fans here, but he's never interested me. Is this a case of two wrongs making a right? Am I mistaken? Has anyone heard the whole album? Also, I'm interested in anyone's comments on Kings of Leon. I never paid too much attention to the neo-garage movement (Strokes, Hives, Vines, etc.), but KOL has caught my ear. I love both of them in their solo guises, and thought the Extra Glenns record was only okay. But it was "okay" in a very satisfying way; I liked it a lot on first listen and was surprised when almost none of it grew on me or sank in. The music on there sounds more like each one's recent stuff: the Mountain Goats' "produced" album _Tallahassee_, and Bruno's _A Cat May Look At A Queen_. In fact, thinking about that makes me want to give it another chance, since it came out before either of those two. a ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 14:10:39 -0500 From: Chris Prew Subject: [loud-fans] Emusic recommendation Since Emusic has been terribly remiss in adding new albums recently, those of you who haven't should go and download Elf Power's "When the Red Kind Comes". I only have Sha Sha (I'd assumed it was his only one -- he's like 19 and being promoted as a new artist, but that doesn't mean I assumed correctly) and was a little disappointed it with it after really liking "Wasted And Ready". It wasn't bad, just a touch reminiscent of the days when I never expected to like more than half the songs on an album. a ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 17:39:02 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Extra Glenns On Monday, September 22, 2003, at 03:11 PM, jer fairall wrote: >> Also, I'm interested in anyone's comments on >> Kings of Leon. > > Supposedly, if you like them you will also like > My Morning Jacket, who also have a new album > out at the moment. I really don't know anything about My Morning Jacket, except I saw them on Conan O'Brien's show the other day doing a pretty credible Lynyrd Skynyrd pastiche. Extra Glenns I found sufficiently non-riveting to sell (we've already got the best glenn right here, after all), but the early work of the Mountain Goats: solid! Spinning the hell out of THE NEWEST SOUND AROUND (thanks Stewart!), Andy Beatles Rework "Let It Be" Thu Sep 18, 5:05 PM ET Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo! By Josh Grossberg The lads of Liverpool are ready to get back to where they once belonged, at least where it concerns the making of the Let It Be album. The surviving Beatles plan to release on November 17 a newly revised edition of their classic 1970 opus, which strips out the flowery orchestrations added by legendary producer Phil Spector and recaptures the Fab Four at their most magical and intimate, the Beatles' company, Apple Corps. Records announced today. "If we had today's technology back then, it would sound like this because this is the noise we made in the studio. It's all exactly as it was in the room. You're right there now," Paul McCartney (news) said in a statement. The quieter version, dubbed Let It Be...Naked and approved by the late George Harrison before his death in 2001, has long been a pet project of McCartney's, who thought the original recordings deserved to be heard and was never happy with the string arrangements Spector added to "The Long and Winding Road." McCartney and John Lennon (news) penned most of the tunes in 1969 and originally wanted to call the new collection, Get Back. But the Beatles ended up disbanding in 1970 before finishing the album. Lennon, who had an affinity for Spector's revolutionary implementation of studio effects and over-dubbing to create his trademark wall of sound--an orchestral wash that helped score hits for the Righteous Brothers, the Ronettes, and many others--invited him to sift through hundreds of hours of tapes and complete what ultimately became Let It Be, which accompanied the film of the same name. Conceiving the idea for the re-issue over two years ago, McCartney and drummer Ringo Starr hope to present the Moptop's final release as they originally intended--a back-to-basics album showcasing a roots-oriented rock and roll band. "When I first heard it, it was really uplifting," Starr told Reuters. "It took you back again to the times when we were this band, the Beatle band." Naked nixes "Dig It" and "Maggie Mae," plus background dialogue, in favor of featuring "Don't Let Me Down," a track that was not on the original album. And another treat for Beatles fans, the de-Spectorized version will also include a special 20-minute bonus disc of rare footage of the musicians in recording and film sessions as well as a CD booklet containing photos and text that was originally published in the Let It Be vinyl booklet. While the Beatles may be gone, they're more popular than ever these days. One, their compilation of number-one hits, has already sold over 24 million copies worldwide. Plus, those wanting to see John, Paul, George and Ringo at their apex, be on the lookout for The Ed Sullivan Shows Featuring the Beatles, a two-disc DVD set containing all 20 historic performances of the British band, which hits stores on October 28. The BBC, meanwhile plans to air a special on September 20 showing lost footage of the era, including clips of Lennon hanging out with wife Yoko Ono and the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 17:47:48 -0500 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Ben Kweller? You are correct about the Milwaukee thing...but the Oriental Drugs t-shirt is one of two Milwaukee-based t-shirts to have achieved national fame and fortune, the other one being the Atomic Records t-shirt, featured most recently in a national venue about half a year ago with Damien Jurado stuffed precariously inside one in the pages of _Magnet_ magazine. Hoo-ha! And Spector's productions with and without Lennon never rocked, natch? How odd that of the six masterminds on this sprawling project, two of the four living ones should find themselves in the press, and legal hot water, right around this announcement. I'm not sure about that. They don't have the drawing power to fill 20,000 capacity suburban sheds anymore, but the audience was definitely there at the two shows I saw, at Bumbershoot in Seattle, and Shoreline in Mountain View CA. Memorial Stadium was jam-packed on Labor Day and Shoreline was either two thirds full or one third empty, depending on one's perspective, but those there were definitely into the show. That show was heavily sponsored and promoted by a local radio station (KFOG), and a large portion of their set was selected by requests from KFOG listeners, so it was quite heavy on the oldies: "So. Central Rain", "Rockville" (with Mike Mills on lead vocals), "Fall On Me", even "Permanent Vacation"! (a *real* REM rarity from the early days 1980-81, heavily bootlegged but never recorded.. wonder who requested that one?). During my roadtrip up to Seattle and back this weekend, I listened to all twelve R.E.M. albums in chronological order, and was astonished at how timely and topical the period songs from LIFES RICH PAGEANT and DOCUMENT are in 2003. I listened to JOSHUA TREE recently, and it sounded *sooo* 1987, but DOCUMENT could've come out this year. That's my take at least. > I also just heard "Bad Day" on the radio, and it's kind of cool, but, > ummm, aren't those the same chords to "End of the World"? The LRP demo version of "Bad Day" from the bootlegs also has lots of lyrics from "End Of The World" ("light a candle, light a votive. step down, step down"), so I suspect they're different versions of the same song. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 2003 22:24:19 -0700 From: Michael Zwirn Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Belated R.E.M. writeup On Monday, September 22, 2003, at 06:43 PM, Steve Holtebeck wrote: > Michael Zwirn wrote (Re: REM) >> It's reassuring that the band it still as good as it is, but >> saddening that the audience just doesn't seem to be there anymore. > > I'm not sure about that. I was there too, of course, and it's a 20 dollar all day music event. R.E.M. was the headlining band on the last night of the festival, and the audience was subsequently enormous. Would that many people have shown up if they had to pay $37 minimum (as the tickets were at the Amphitheatre at Clark County) for just Wilco and R.E.M.? I don't think so. I mean, I don't think I would have! Call it poor marketing or a band past its commercial peak, but it was a poorly attended show, no two ways about it. The Oregonian estimated the crowd at less than 5000 (!). > That show was heavily sponsored and promoted by a local radio station > (KFOG), and a large portion of their set was selected by requests from > KFOG listeners, so it was quite heavy on the oldies: It seems as if all the shows on their current tour are including some rarities, which sounds like a great benefit for the longtime fans. > > During my roadtrip up to Seattle and back this weekend, I listened to > all twelve R.E.M. albums in chronological order, and was astonished at > how timely and topical the period songs from LIFES RICH PAGEANT and > DOCUMENT are in 2003. I think the LRP stuff is fitting in wonderfully; it's been a pleasure to hear some of these pieces in the current sets. Haven't played the album in awhile, but I'd be happy to do so sometime soon. Document is my 2nd or 3rd favorite R.E.M. record, so I play that one quite a bit.
